Redskins @ Rams 4th quarter game review

1st quarter review
2nd quarter
3rd quarter

FOURTH QUARTER

2-8-WAS 46 (15:00) K.Darby right tackle to WAS 33 for 13 yards (K.Moore).

Carriker gets too high and his stood up by the RG and RT – the RT then sheds off and gets to the second level to neutralize Fletcher while the LF pulls to the right and blocks Rocky to keep the running lane open.

1-10-WAS 33 (14:29) K.Darby right tackle to WAS 27 for 6 yards (K.Moore).

Redskins in a two DL nickel dormation with Haynesworth and Carriker. The C blocks down on Carriker and does a good job of helping the RG carry him out of the play, then comes off and squares up Fletcher to open the hole.

2-4-WAS 27 (13:49) (Shotgun) K.Darby left guard to WAS 24 for 3 yards (L.Fletcher).

3-1-WAS 24 (13:08) K.Darby up the middle to WAS 22 for 2 yards (B.Orakpo).

Golston is driven to the ground by the RT and TE.

1-10-WAS 22 (12:25) K.Darby left guard to WAS 19 for 3 yards (P.Daniels, L.Fletcher).

2-7-WAS 19 (11:47) (Shotgun) S.Bradford pass incomplete short left to D.Amendola.

Haynesworth burst through the A gap from a nickel alignment but get tripped up and goes to the ground. He tries to recover and get his hand into Bradford’s face but is unable to create real pressure – Bradford misses the WR on the screen all by himself.

3-7-WAS 19 (11:43) (Shotgun) S.Bradford pass incomplete deep left to B.Gibson.

The three man rush doesn’t create pressure and he has the WR wide open, but Bradford just overthrows him.

4-7-WAS 19 (11:39) Josh.Brown 37 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-C.Massey, Holder-D.Jones.

WAS 16 SL 24, 11 plays, 46 yards, 5:20 drive, 3:25 elapsed

Josh.Brown kicks 74 yards from SL 30 to WAS -4. D.Thomas to WAS 27 for 31 yards (L.Grant).

Washington Redskins at 11:35, (1st play from scrimmage 11:30)

1-10-WAS 27 (11:30) D.McNabb pass short middle to S.Moss to WAS 41 for 14 yards (N.Diggs). PENALTY on WAS-S.Heyer, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at WAS 27 - No Play.

Sellers and Torain both head to the offensive right as part of the play action, so when a safety blitzes from the left Heyer has no help and has to grab him.

1-20-WAS 17 (10:54) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short left to S.Moss to WAS 25 for 8 yards (B.Fletcher).

Screen – Heyer does a good job getting to the outside and finding a DB to block.

2-12-WAS 25 (10:15) D.McNabb sacked at WAS 22 for -3 yards (J.Hall).

This is why Torain will not be taking Portis’ job outright just yet despite offering more as a ballcarrier. Lichtensteiger is faced with two blitzing LBs and chooses the outside one. Torain, after taking the fake handoff, cannot adjust quickly enough and dives ineffectually at the second LBs feet.

3-15-WAS 22 (9:38) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short left to S.Moss to WAS 33 for 11 yards (J.Butler, J.Laurinaitis).

4-4-WAS 33 (9:06) G.Gano punts 40 yards to SL 27, Center-N.Sundberg. D.Amendola to SL 48 for 21 yards (B.Westbrook).

4.75 seconds.

St. Louis Rams at 8:53

1-10-SL 48 (8:53) K.Toston left tackle to WAS 44 for 8 yards (A.Carter).

Once again Golston and Maake are easily handled to allow an easy run up the middle.

2-2-WAS 44 (8:18) K.Darby up the middle to WAS 44 for no gain (K.Golston).

This is how it’s supposed to happen: Maake and Golston handle the C and RG respectively and push them back while still maintaining gap responsibility, then Golston pushes his man aside to take down the RB.

3-2-WAS 44 (7:40) K.Darby up the middle to WAS 43 for 1 yard (L.Fletcher)

The RT does get out to Fletcher after chipping Holliday, but Fletcher absorbs the blow and sheds the block and makes a great play just short of the first down. He is helped by Orakpo who fights through a hold by the LT to force the RB into him.

4-1-WAS 43 (7:17) K.Darby left guard to WAS 41 for 2 yards (B.Orakpo).

This was literally inches to go – the Redskins defense actually stuffed the play pretty well and would have stopped them if it had even been 4th and half a yard.

1-10-WAS 41 (7:17) S.Bradford pass short right to M.Clayton to WAS 11 for 30 yards (L.Landry).

Perhaps the most memorable play of the afternoon – Bradford throws a quick hitch. Hall closes to make the play but steps on an invisible banana peel and his feet slide right out from under him and he falls flat on his ass. Good speed from Landry to take down the WR from behind.

1-10-WAS 11 (6:59) K.Darby up the middle to WAS 11 for no gain. PENALTY on SL-J.Smith, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at WAS 11 - No Play.

Despite what the PBP says this was actually a 5 yard gain before it got called back.

1-20-WAS 21 (6:32) (Shotgun) S.Bradford pass to D.Amendola to WAS 13 for 8 yards (L.Landry).

2-12-WAS 13 (5:50) K.Toston left guard to WAS 11 for 2 yards (L.Fletcher).

Fletcher seems to recognize what play is coming – seconds before the snap he walks up and taps Maake’s butt to signal something. Then he flows directly to the (offensive) left A gap to meet the RB while avoiding the RG who tries to get him at the second level.

3-10-WAS 11 (5:10) K.Darby right guard to WAS 11 for no gain (R.McIntosh).

Nice play by Carter, who beats up the TE to hold the corner and leave the RB with nowhere to go. Of course the Rams were clearly playing for a field goal at this point…

4-10-WAS 11 (4:26) Josh.Brown 29 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-C.Massey, Holder-D.Jones.

WAS 16 SL 27, 9 plays, 41 yards, 4:31 drive, 10:38 elapsed

Josh.Brown kicks 75 yards from SL 30 to WAS -5. D.Thomas, Touchback.

Washington Redskins at 4:22

1-10-WAS 20 (4:22) D.McNabb pass short right to C.Cooley to WAS 36 for 16 yards (B.Kehl, M.Johnson). St. Louis challenged the fumble ruling, and the play was Upheld. (Timeout #2.)

1-10-WAS 36 (3:51) (Shotgun) PENALTY on WAS-K.Lichtensteiger, False Start, 5 yards, enforced at WAS 36 - No Play.

1-15-WAS 31 (3:51) D.McNabb pass incomplete short left to C.Cooley (G.Gibson).

The DT in a 3-man front splits Rabach and Lichtensteiger and gets his hand up to deflect the pass.

2-15-WAS 31 (3:47) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short left intended for S.Moss INTERCEPTED by B.Fletcher [B.Kehl] at WAS 45. B.Fletcher to WAS 41 for 4 yards (S.Moss).

The pass rush draws Hicks to the inside and Brown to the outside, opening a huge gap for both a LB and a DB to blitz through. Portis is only one man, so although he clobbers the DB the LB is able to close and the impending contact forces a bad throw from McNabb, which sails right into the DB’s hands. And that’s the ballgame.

St. Louis Rams at 3:39

1-10-WAS 41 (3:39) K.Toston up the middle to WAS 40 for 1 yard (M.Kemoeatu).

Nice play but Maake – out-muscles the RG to stuff the RB.

2-9-WAS 40 (3:03) K.Toston left guard to WAS 34 for 6 yards. PENALTY on SL-J.Smith, Offensive Holding, 11 yards, enforced at WAS 40 - No Play.

2-20-SL 49 (2:58) K.Darby right tackle to SL 49 for no gain (L.Fletcher).

Seems like the D line is waking up now that it’s too late to matter. Carriker and Andre Carter collapse the offensive right side of the line – they along with Landry blitzing off the edge force the play back inside, where Golston has fought the RG down the line of scrimmage and sheds him to make the play.

Timeout #1 by WAS at 02:52.

3-20-SL 49 (2:52) S.Bradford pass short right to M.Clayton to WAS 26 for 25 yards (K.Moore).

Hall gets beat by a good route on the sidelines, then has a chance to make the play short of the first but makes a poor tackle attempt.

1-10-WAS 26 (2:09) K.Toston left guard to WAS 22 for 4 yards (M.Kemoeatu).

** OK, I don’t usually do this. But I will confess I just don’t have it in me today to go through this last two minutes of “garbage time,” as they call it. I have left the PBP below for your reference, but it’s very nice out and I’m going outside. Don't hold it against me. **

Two-Minute Warning

2-6-WAS 22 (2:00) K.Toston right guard to WAS 20 for 2 yards (L.Alexander).

Timeout #2 by WAS at 01:55.

3-4-WAS 20 (1:55) K.Darby up the middle to WAS 18 for 2 yards (M.Kemoeatu).

Timeout #3 by WAS at 01:48.

4-2-WAS 18 (1:48) Josh.Brown 36 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-C.Massey, Holder-D.Jones.

WAS 16 SL 30, 7 plays, 23 yards, 1:55 drive, 13:16 elapsed

Josh.Brown kicks 66 yards from SL 30 to WAS 4. D.Thomas to WAS 27 for 23 yards (K.Toston).

Washington Redskins at 1:44, (1st play from scrimmage 1:39)

1-10-WAS 27 (1:39) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short middle to K.Williams to WAS 36 for 9 yards (B.Kehl).

2-1-WAS 36 (1:15) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short left to K.Williams ran ob at WAS 41 for 5 yards (B.Kehl).

1-10-WAS 41 (1:11) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short right to R.Williams to SL 49 for 10 yards (R.Bartell).

1-10-SL 49 (:47) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short left to C.Cooley to SL 30 for 19 yards (J.King, B.Kehl). P15

1-10-SL 30 (:27) D.McNabb spiked the ball to stop the clock.

2-10-SL 30 (:26) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass incomplete deep left to J.Galloway [G.Gibson].

3-10-SL 30 (:21) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short middle to C.Cooley to SL 24 for 6 yards (J.King) [J.Hall].
