Redskins vs. Colts 2nd quarter review

1st quarter review is here

1-10-IND 46 (15:00) P.Manning pass short right to P.Garcon to WAS 43 for 11 yards (D.Hall).

1-10-WAS 43 (14:34) (No Huddle, Shotgun) J.Addai left tackle to WAS 40 for 3 yards (L.Fletcher).

Colts run a draw to take advantage of Orakpo’s outside rush, but Fletcher reads it immediately.

2-7-WAS 40 (14:04) (No Huddle) P.Manning pass short left to R.Wayne pushed ob at WAS 28 for 12 yards (P.Buchanon).

Reed Doughty threatens the LG with a blitz and pulls him inside to open a blitz lane for Moore, but Moore is picked up by the RB. Alexander beats the RG to the outside and starts to close in, but Manning is not rattled by the shrinking pocket.

1-10-WAS 28 (13:56) (No Huddle) J.Addai right tackle to WAS 24 for 4 yards (C.Rogers).

OK I’m all in favor of replays but not when they make me miss the first half of the next play. There appeared to be a lot of blockers on LBs – couldn’t tell you how they got there - but Rogers beat the block of a WR and lowered his shoulder to make a hit on the RB and keep the gain modest.

2-6-WAS 24 (13:30) (No Huddle, Shotgun) P.Manning pass short right to P.Garcon pushed ob at WAS 10 for 14 yards (L.Landry).

1-10-WAS 10 (13:21) (No Huddle) J.Addai right end to WAS 5 for 5 yards (L.Landry, D.Hall).

The TE kicks Carter to the outside and Jarmon is moved off the line by a C-RG double team. The LT tries to get out to the second level to block Doughty, but Doughty slips under his arm to get into the hole but the RB manages to dodge him.

2-5-WAS 5 (12:48) (No Huddle, Shotgun) P.Manning pass short middle to A.Collie for 5 yards, TOUCHDOWN.

Rogers seems to think he is responsible for the flat and expect a safety to be behind him in the end zone, but Kareem Moore helps Philip Buchanon against the outside receiver and the slot guy springs wide open in the end zone.

A.Vinatieri extra point is GOOD, Center-J.Snow, Holder-P.McAfee.

IND 14 WAS 7, 12 plays, 84 yards, 3:38 drive, 2:16 elapsed

P.McAfee kicks 70 yards from IND 30 to WAS 0. B.Banks pushed ob at WAS 44 for 44 yards (J.Tryon).

Goddamn this guy’s good. I don’t know how manages to be so elusive but avoid becoming a “dancer” – he is constantly pressing the ball downfield. Solid block by Kareem Moore lets Banks turn it upfield.

Washington Redskins at 12:44, (1st play from scrimmage 12:36)

1-10-WAS 44 (12:36) R.Torain left end to IND 44 for 12 yards (C.Session).

You remember how in the first quarter Cris Collinsworth pointed out that instead of using Sellers as a lead blocker they were mostly using him to cut off the backside pursuit, as that was a sensible way to attack an undersized but speedy defense? Well this time they didn’t. Sellers instead leads to the playside and the LDE zooms unblocked from the backside to wrap Torain up for what should have been a loss. But in a move we’re quickly becoming accustomed to Torain spins out of his grasp then takes advantage of a LB’s back angle to turn this failed play into a first down.

1-10-IND 44 (11:57) D.McNabb pass incomplete short right to S.Moss.

We’ve been hearing about how the coaches are trying to get McNabb to have a wider base in the pocket make his throws more consistent. He doesn’t have it here, and the throw is in the ground despite a lack of pressure. Maybe he should try it.

2-10-IND 44 (11:50) R.Torain up the middle to IND 46 for -2 yards (R.Mathis; C.Session).

Either Brown or Cooley was meant to block the LDE, but each seems to think they’re supposed to go straight to the second level so Torain is easily stuffed.

3-12-IND 46 (11:09) D.McNabb pass incomplete short left to S.Moss.

Keiland Williams has a nice pickup of a DT who comes free off Lichtensteiger, and it ensures McNabb has plenty of room to step into his throw off of the three step drop. But he throws off-balance despite the lack of pressure and misses Moss on an easy flat pass.

4-12-IND 46 (11:05) H.Smith punts 32 yards to IND 14, Center-N.Sundberg, fair catch by K.Moore.

4.1 seconds

Indianapolis Colts at 10:58

1-10-IND 14 (10:58) (Shotgun) M.Hart right guard to IND 18 for 4 yards (A.Carter; V.Holliday).

2-6-IND 18 (10:37) (No Huddle, Shotgun) P.Manning pass deep middle to A.Collie to IND 35 for 17 yards (K.Moore, R.Doughty).

Orakpo tries to stunt inside Lorenzo Alexander but finds a double team there waiting for him. Vonnie Holliday is initially stood up by the RG, but when Carter manages to crash the RT inside Holliday slips outside him – not as a designed stunt, I think it was an on the fly adjustment – but it takes too long to develop and Manning makes the throw.

1-10-IND 35 (10:11) (No Huddle) M.Hart right end to IND 42 for 7 yards (B.Orakpo, L.Fletcher).

Doughty seemed to get a lot of time in Landry’s usual spot where he’s basically lined up as a LB. This is in three safety packages with both Moore and Landry in coverage. In this case he unfortunately gets a guard in his face and is blown up to create a good gain.

2-3-IND 42 (9:45) (No Huddle, Shotgun) P.Manning pass deep left to R.Wayne to WAS 40 for 18 yards (L.Landry).

Despite lining up for press coverage Buchanon is unable to impede the WR off the line, so he is easily beaten and Landry is playing too deep to bail him out.

1-10-WAS 40 (9:19) (No Huddle) M.Hart right guard to WAS 34 for 6 yards (K.Moore, L.Fletcher).

Both DTs – Alexander and Holliday in this case – get bulldozed off the line by double teams.

2-4-WAS 34 (8:54) (No Huddle, Shotgun) P.Manning pass incomplete deep right to P.Garcon.

3-4-WAS 34 (8:48) (No Huddle, Shotgun) P.Manning pass short right to D.Clark to WAS 28 for 6 yards (R.Doughty; D.Hall).

1-10-WAS 28 (8:26) (No Huddle, Shotgun) J.Addai up the middle to WAS 26 for 2 yards (L.Alexander; J.Jarmon).

Chris Wilson is standing at RDE – I mean I guess it makes the most sense to conceptualize this as a four man front but honestly I don’t know what the hell position to call guys in the front seven in this defense – he tries to stunt inside Lorenzo Alexander at DT but the LG walls himself off and he takes himself out of the running lane. But Alexander on the LT is able to control his inside gap and make the stop.

2-8-WAS 26 (7:59) (No Huddle) P.Manning pass incomplete deep middle to P.Garcon.

So much of Lorenzo Alexander’s unheralded pass rush success last year came off a devastating spin move which he went back to again and again because it just kept working. It has been mysteriously absent so far in 2010. But he breaks it out again here as the RDE in a three man front. The LG is rather helpless against him and he ends up at Manning’s feet – interfering with his follow through and forcing a short throw on what otherwise would have been an easy touchdown – the WR had successfully split the safeties with a post pattern.

3-8-WAS 26 (7:55) (No Huddle, Shotgun) P.Manning pass short right to D.Clark to WAS 20 for 6 yards (R.Doughty, K.Moore).

4-2-WAS 20 (7:14) A.Vinatieri 38 yard field goal is No Good, Wide Right, Center-J.Snow, Holder-P.McAfee.

Washington Redskins at 7:08

1-10-WAS 28 (7:08) R.Torain right end to WAS 40 for 12 yards (D.Muir).

Santana cuts the backside pursuit as Torain runs left. Armstrong puts a solid block on the SLB to knock him off balance, then Cooley finishes him off and Torain has the corner.

1-10-WAS 40 (6:31) R.Torain up the middle to WAS 44 for 4 yards (A.Bethea, J.Tryon).

A good seal is created by Brown, Lichtensteiger, and Sellers. But Trent Williams’ attempted kick-out on Freeney is beaten by a spin move back to the inside, so Torain can’t take proper advantage of it.

2-6-WAS 44 (5:50) PENALTY on WAS-A.Hicks, False Start, 5 yards, enforced at WAS 44 - No Play.

2-11-WAS 39 (5:33) D.McNabb pass incomplete short left to C.Cooley.

Robert Mathis (LDE) splits Brown and Hicks and his in hot pursuit of McNabb on his bootleg. He manages to hit Cooley in the flat but it just bounces off of his hands.

3-11-WAS 39 (5:27) D.McNabb pass incomplete short middle to S.Moss [D.Freeney].

4-11-WAS 39 (5:20) H.Smith punts 44 yards to IND 17, Center-N.Sundberg. K.Moore to IND 20 for 3 yards (C.Wilson). FUMBLES (C.Wilson), recovered by IND-B.King at IND 22. B.King to IND 22 for no gain (N.Sundberg).

4.3 seconds

Indianapolis Colts at 5:06

1-10-IND 22 (5:06) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass short middle to A.Collie to IND 31 for 9 yards (C.Rogers, K.Moore).

Doughty reacts badly and ends up on the ground without touching the WR, allowing him to gain several more yards.

2-1-IND 31 (4:41) (No Huddle) J.Addai right end to IND 45 for 14 yards (L.Landry).

Landry tries to run around the WR who is trying to seal him to the inside. This lets the RB beat him to the corner, then he runs through DeAngelo Hall’s low tackle to turn it into a big gain. Landry recovers and chases him down from behind.

1-10-IND 45 (4:14) (No Huddle, Shotgun) P.Manning pass incomplete short left to R.Wayne (P.Buchanon).

Buchanon basically tackles the WR from behind with the ball in flight – not sure how this wasn’t a PI.

2-10-IND 45 (4:09) (No Huddle, Shotgun) P.Manning pass deep right to P.Garcon to WAS 34 for 21 yards (D.Hall).

1-10-WAS 34 (3:41) (No Huddle, Shotgun) P.Manning pass short middle to D.Clark to WAS 30 for 4 yards (C.Rogers). Rogers was injured during the play.

2-6-WAS 30 (3:13) P.Manning pass incomplete short left to J.Addai (L.Fletcher).

Manning runs a bootleg but then tries to quickly throw across his body to the RB on a swing pass, but Fletcher is tracking him and decks him just as the ball arrives.

3-6-WAS 30 (3:07) (No Huddle) PENALTY on WAS, Defensive 12 On-field, 5 yards, enforced at WAS 30 - No Play.

3-1-WAS 25 (2:42) J.Addai right guard to WAS 25 for no gain (L.Landry; L.Fletcher).

Landry bursts off the right edge faster than the slot receiver can make his way over to block him.

4-1-WAS 25 (2:05) A.Vinatieri 43 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-J.Snow, Holder-P.McAfee.

Two-Minute Warning

IND 17 WAS 7, 8 plays, 53 yards, 1 penalty, 3:06 drive, 13:00 elapsed

P.McAfee kicks 64 yards from IND 30 to WAS 6. C.Simpson to WAS 38 for 32 yards (K.Dawson; C.Glenn).

Washington Redskins at 2:00, (1st play from scrimmage 1:52)

1-10-WAS 38 (1:52) D.McNabb pass short right to C.Cooley to WAS 45 for 7 yards (C.Session).

Hicks gets pushed right back into McNabb’s face. In this case ignoring the wide-base coaching point comes in handy as he is standing tall enough to whip it over Hick’s head despite the pressure.

2-3-WAS 45 (1:31) (No Huddle) D.McNabb pass short middle to S.Moss to 50 for 5 yards (P.Angerer).

Hicks is driven back again by the DT, and Mathis at LDE puts on a devastating spin move to beat Brown to this inside. In fact it’s so good it also beats Keiland Williams, who was looking to assist Brown with a chip on the outside shoulder. But again McNabb is able to sling a hard throw out of a collapsed pocket.

1-10-50 (1:10) (No Huddle) D.McNabb pass short middle to S.Moss to IND 37 for 13 yards (A.Bethea).

Cooley drives hard upfield on a go route the WLB, who comes across the field to man up on him, downfield. He and the trailing LB just so happen to impede the slot DB’s ability to cover Santana on the crossing route, but it couldn’t possibly be a designed pick because that would of course illegal.

Timeout #1 by WAS at 00:57.

1-10-IND 37 (:57) D.McNabb pass short middle to C.Cooley to IND 30 for 7 yards (C.Session).

2-3-IND 30 (:38) (No Huddle) D.McNabb pass incomplete short right to J.Galloway.

Galloway is open over the first down line on a curl, but McNabb throws well behind him for no discernable reason.

3-3-IND 30 (:35) D.McNabb pass incomplete deep middle to J.Galloway (J.Powers).

The DB is right in Galloway’s hip pocket on this post and knocks it away.

4-3-IND 30 (:31) G.Gano 48 yard field goal is No Good, Wide Right, Center-N.Sundberg, Holder-H.Smith.

Indianapolis Colts at 0:24

1-10-IND 38 (:24) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass incomplete deep middle to P.Garcon.

2-10-IND 38 (:20) (No Huddle, Shotgun) PENALTY on WAS-B.Orakpo, Defensive Offside, 5 yards, enforced at IND 38 - No Play.

2-5-IND 43 (:20) (No Huddle, Shotgun) P.Manning pass short middle to D.Clark to WAS 49 for 8 yards (R.Doughty).

Holliday and Alexander, as the two DTs, try to stunt but it develops way too slowly to create pressure, and Orakpo continues to threaten the LT but get carried upfield just far enough for Manning to make his throws unmolested.

Timeout #2 by IND at 00:12.

1-10-WAS 49 (:12) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass deep right to B.White pushed ob at WAS 30 for 19 yards (L.Landry).

Hall is beat badly off the line and has no safety help, at least not until Landry arrives late to make sure the WR is forced out rather than being allowed to turn upfield.

1-10-WAS 30 (:06) A.Vinatieri 48 yard field goal is BLOCKED (B.Banks), Center-J.Snow, Holder-P.McAfee.

Banks is lined up on the far left, posing an obvious speed threat. There is a blocker lined up just behind the linemen and facing outward at a 90 degree angle specifically to counter Banks, but Banks is so great he’s in front of the kicker before the blocker is even out of his stance.

Washington Redskins at 0:02

1-10-WAS 38 (:02) D.McNabb kneels to WAS 37 for -1 yard
