FOURTH QUARTER
2-4-WAS 28 (15:00) J.Addai up the middle to WAS 23 for 5 yards (L.Fletcher).
Carter and Alexander take on the LG and RT but are on the line in a standing position and obviously give up leverage to the linemem. Golston is the only man with his hand on the ground at the nose but the C (too) easily overpowers him. All three are carried to the offensive left creating a rather obvious cutback lane, and the lack of any other presence on the line allows the RG to get out to Fletcher 5 yards downfield. First down.
1-10-WAS 23 (14:35) (No Huddle) J.Addai right end to WAS 17 for 6 yards (L.Fletcher). FUMBLES (L.Fletcher), RECOVERED by WAS-L.Landry at WAS 17. L.Landry to WAS 17 for no gain (P.Garcon). IND-J.Addai was injured during the play. His return is Questionable. 29- Shoulder Injury
On a stretch to the right the backside guard fails at cutting Golston so he is able to come down the line and wrap up Addai as he starts to turn upfield. Before he is dragged down Fletcher comes from downfield and lowers his shoulder right into the ball, knocking it out.
Washington Redskins at 14:23
1-10-WAS 17 (14:23) D.McNabb pass short right to A.Armstrong to WAS 21 for 4 yards (K.Hayden).
2-6-WAS 21 (13:51) D.McNabb pass short middle to F.Davis to WAS 26 for 5 yards (C.Session).
3-1-WAS 26 (13:13) R.Torain left end pushed ob at WAS 23 for -3 yards (J.Powers).
The Colts have stacked their LBs at the line to guard against a run up the middle. Lichtensteiger helps Rabach double team a DL, but Trent Williams pulls, allowing the WLB free into the backfield. He pursues Torain on the toss, dives, and gets him around the ankles. Torain would have had a good chance of breaking this tackle, but Sellers completely whiffs on his lead block a DB and Torain is finished off before he can wrestle free.
4-4-WAS 23 (12:58) H.Smith punts 49 yards to IND 28, Center-N.Sundberg. J.Powers to IND 36 for 8 yards (R.Doughty; C.Wilson).
3.9 seconds – not the first line drive from Hunter.
Indianapolis Colts at 12:48
1-10-IND 36 (12:48) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass short middle to D.Clark to IND 40 for 4 yards (C.Rogers, R.Doughty).
Nice tackle by Rogers.
2-6-IND 40 P21 (12:11) (No Huddle, Shotgun) P.Manning pass short middle to D.Clark to WAS 36 for 24 yards (L.Landry; R.Doughty).
Dallas Clark fakes the out and Doughty bites badly, and is unable to recover when he cuts back inside. Clark is able to turn upfield with a lot of space in front of him, then picks up even more yards when Kareem Moore overruns him and is victimized by a cutback.
1-10-WAS 36 (11:26) (No Huddle) M.Hart left end to WAS 27 for 9 yards (L.Fletcher; K.Moore).
The whole front seven bites on the counter action and is easily walled off to the inside.
2-1-WAS 27 (10:44) (No Huddle) M.Hart up the middle to WAS 24 for 3 yards (L.Landry; L.Fletcher).
I’m getting tired of writing this: Redskins line up with one lineman in a short yardage situation. Alexander and Carter are covering the offensive left side of the line and of course the RT and TE get under their pads quite easily. First down.
1-10-WAS 24 (10:07) (No Huddle) M.Hart right tackle to WAS 24 for no gain (A.Carter).
Andre Carter gets a blow on the LT’s shoulder and knocks him back then chases the play down from the backside.
2-10-WAS 24 (9:32) (No Huddle, Shotgun) P.Manning pass incomplete short middle to D.Clark.
This must have been a blow route. It appears Dallas Clark runs a dig route but Manning expects him to run a skinny post to the end zone. The pass was about half a yard too short for Kareem Moore to come up with the interception.
Timeout #1 by IND at 09:26.
3-10-WAS 24 (9:26) (Shotgun) M.Hart up the middle to WAS 15 for 9 yards (L.Fletcher).
Lorenzo Alexander and Vonnie Holliday are lined up as defensive tackles, but standing. Can you guess what comes next? They are completely overpowered by O-lineman who have the leverage advantage, and due to the ease with which the LOS is dominated the Colts have no trouble getting blockers out to the second level. In this case both the RT and C easily take out Doughty who is playing SLB in this formation and the slot receiver puts a good block on Rogers to preserve a nice cutback lane. Only a nice chase-down from behind stops the RB just short of the first down.
4-1-WAS 15 (8:45) A.Vinatieri 33 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-J.Snow, Holder-P.McAfee.
IND 27 WAS 17, 8 plays, 49 yards, 4:07 drive, 6:19 elapsed
P.McAfee kicks 72 yards from IND 30 to WAS -2. B.Banks to WAS 27 for 29 yards (D.Townsend). PENALTY on WAS-K.Golston, Illegal Wedge, 8 yards, enforced at WAS 16.
Washington Redskins at 8:41, (1st play from scrimmage 8:36)
1-10-WAS 8 (8:36) D.McNabb pass short middle to S.Moss to WAS 21 for 13 yards (J.Powers, P.Angerer).
1-10-WAS 21 (7:57) D.McNabb pass short middle to K.Williams to WAS 28 for 7 yards (J.Tryon).
A simple dump off. Keiland absorbs a solid blow from a LB and shakes him off to pick up several more yards.
2-3-WAS 28 (7:17) D.McNabb pass short middle to S.Moss to WAS 31 for 3 yards (P.Angerer; A.Bethea).
Williams gets caught backpedaling too quickly and Freeney gets his hands into him and drives him back, at the same time as Mathis overpowers Jammal Brown. McNabb is flushed all the way back to the 10 yard line, but somehow throws across his body and finds deep over the middle (well deep from where he was, it was only about 2 yards over the original LOS).
1-10-WAS 31 (6:33) D.McNabb pass incomplete short middle to F.Davis (F.Moala).
Lichtensteiger gives up the pressure that leads to the tipped pass. Davis manages to grab it over the middle but an immediate hit from the MLB knocks it out.
2-10-WAS 31 (6:28) D.McNabb pass deep middle to A.Armstrong to 50 for 19 yards (A.Francisco, K.Hayden).
Armstrong runs a nice post to take advantage of the diversionary routes run by the other two members of the trips bunch.
1-10-50 (5:50) D.McNabb pass short right to S.Moss to IND 44 for 6 yards (J.Powers).
2-4-IND 44 (5:20) D.McNabb pass short right to F.Davis to IND 38 for 6 yards (A.Bethea; C.Session).
1-10-IND 38 (4:47) D.McNabb pass short middle to K.Williams to IND 37 for 1 yard (P.Angerer; C.Session).
When McNabb is forced out of the pocket receivers anywhere on the field have to be alert. Mathis gets past Brown’s outside shoulder and McNabb is forced out of the pocket to the right, then throws across his body over the middle, as he does routinely.
2-9-IND 37 (4:12) D.McNabb pass short middle to J.Galloway to IND 19 for 18 yards (J.Tryon).
1-10-IND 19 (3:41) K.Williams right guard to IND 5 for 14 yards (A.Bethea, J.Powers).
Lichtensteiger and Hicks do a good job splitting the DTs and holding them outside long enough for the draw play to develop, and Davis and Rabach each make key downfield blocks for a big gain.
1-5-IND 5 (3:07) D.McNabb scrambles right end for 5 yards, TOUCHDOWN NULLIFIED by Penalty. PENALTY on WAS-T.Williams, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at IND 5 - No Play.
Yes, the touchdown would not have happened without the penalty – the hold is what allowed McNabb to escape the pocket in the first place.
1-15-IND 15 (2:57) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short left to S.Moss pushed ob at IND 8 for 7 yards (A.Francisco).
2-8-IND 8 (2:51) D.McNabb pass short left to K.Williams for 8 yards, TOUCHDOWN.
Almost too easy. The Colts stunt both of their dangerous ends, which is probably pointless because they had been causing problems for both of our OTs one on one. Lichtensteiger picks up Freeney nicely and Mathis just runs himself into Hicks and Rabach, and Williams and Brown have no trouble with the DTs who rush to the outside. In all the time that McNabb has the LBs and DBs all get sucked into the end zone. Two LBs follow Davis which leaves no one to cover Keiland who goes out for a swing pass after it becomes clear he is not needed in pass protection.
G.Gano extra point is GOOD, Center-N.Sundberg, Holder-H.Smith.
IND 27 WAS 24, 12 plays, 92 yards, 5:55 drive, 12:14 elapsed
G.Gano kicks 67 yards from WAS 30 to IND 3. J.Tryon to IND 20 for 17 yards (M.Sellers).
Indianapolis Colts at 2:46, (1st play from scrimmage 2:42)
1-10-IND 20 (2:42) P.Manning pass incomplete short left to R.Wayne (P.Buchanon).
Manning immediately looks to Wayne on the slant, as it is reasonable to assume that Wayne vs. Buchanon is a pretty favorable matchup. But Buchanon covers it perfectly and reaches in front of him to deflect the ball.
2-10-IND 20 (2:38) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass incomplete short middle to D.Clark (L.Landry).
Landry with perfect coverage on Clark right at the first down marker.
3-10-IND 20 (2:32) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass incomplete deep left to R.Wayne (P.Buchanon).
Again Manning tries to exploit Wayne vs. Buchanon, this time down the sideline. Perfect coverage again, and Buchanon turns his head and just the right time to knock away the ball. At a juncture where one first down probably would have iced the game for the Colts, the secondary came through big time and gave the offense one more chance.
4-10-IND 20 (2:26) P.McAfee punts 59 yards to WAS 21, Center-J.Snow. B.Banks pushed ob at WAS 38 for 17 yards (A.Francisco).
Washington Redskins at 2:13
1-10-WAS 38 (2:13) D.McNabb pass short right to A.Armstrong to WAS 43 for 5 yards (K.Hayden).
Two-Minute Warning
2-5-WAS 43 (2:00) D.McNabb sacked at WAS 38 for -5 yards (sack split by E.Foster and R.Mathis).
The pocket holds initially, but when McNabb is unable to find anyone downfield he steps up and Brown is unable to keep Mathis to the outside.
Timeout #1 by WAS at 01:53.
3-10-WAS 38 (1:53) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass incomplete short middle to K.Williams (P.Angerer).
4-10-WAS 38 (1:48) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass incomplete deep middle to A.Armstrong.
Armstrong is in the seam. McNabb overthrows him, but if he hadn’t the Colts had Armstrong well bracketed, to the chances of an interception or a big hit on Armstrong would have been high.
Indianapolis Colts at 1:42
1-10-WAS 38 (1:42) M.Hart left tackle to WAS 37 for 1 yard (A.Carriker; H.Blades).
Carriker caves in the RT and fights down the line.
Timeout #2 by WAS at 01:36.
2-9-WAS 37 (1:36) M.Hart left end to WAS 38 for -1 yards (L.Landry).
Landry lines up over the slot received but is quite obviously looking into the backfield from the beginning. He comes unblocked into the backfield but is on the backside of the play. He is helped by the fact that Orakpo, Daniels, and Golston held the edge and forced a cutback, causing the RB to run right into Landry’s pursuit and Carriker, who started at LDE but beat the RT down the line.
Timeout #3 by WAS at 01:30.
3-10-WAS 38 (1:30) M.Hart left end to WAS 37 for 1 yard (A.Carriker; L.Fletcher).
Golston overpowers the center and the RB has nowhere to cut back to. Aren’t linemen great?
4-9-WAS 37 (1:30) (Run formation) PENALTY on IND-P.Manning, Delay of Game, 5 yards, enforced at WAS 37 - No Play.
4-14-WAS 42 (:41) P.McAfee punts 42 yards to end zone, Center-J.Snow, Touchback.
Washington Redskins at 0:32
1-10-WAS 20 (:32) D.McNabb pass deep left intended for J.Galloway INTERCEPTED by A.Francisco at IND 44. A.Francisco ran ob at IND 43 for -1 yards.
This was not a bad pass by McNabb. Galloway had beaten the coverage and if the ball was two inches higher it would have been a sure (and ridiculously dramatic) touchdown. This was just an exceptional play by the DB.
Indianapolis Colts at 0:24
1-10-IND 43 (:24) P.Manning kneels to IND 42 for -1 yards.
