Redskins @ Eagles 3rd quarter review

1st quarter review 2nd quarter review

THIRD QUARTER

D.Akers kicks 70 yards from PHI 30 to WAS 0. D.Thomas to WAS 24 for 24 yards (O.Gaither).

Washington Redskins at 15:00, (1st play from scrimmage 14:55)

1-10-WAS 24 (14:55) D.McNabb pass incomplete deep right.

2-10-WAS 24 (14:47) C.Portis up the middle to WAS 32 for 8 yards (T.Cole).

Hole is opened by RG Will Mongtgomery (now in for the sick Artis Hicks) blocking down on the DT and Sellers cutting the LDE, then Lichtensteiger and Brown take out the LBs to create the significant gain.

Timeout #1 by WAS at 14:18.
3-2-WAS 32 (14:18) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass incomplete short left to A.Armstrong. PENALTY on PHI-E.Sims, Roughing the Passer, 15 yards, enforced at WAS 32 - No Play.

McNabb has to get the ball out quick because an OLB comes unblocked off the edge. His hot route is Armstrong on a hitch but the DB jumps the route. After McNabb got the ball out it looks like the LB took a good three steps before hitting McNabb, so the penalty is not a shock.

1-10-WAS 47 (14:15) C.Portis left tackle to PHI 42 for 11 yards (Q.Mikell).

Montgomery traps the RDE, then Sellers, Heyer, and Brown each put a solid block on a linebacker.

Timeout #2 by WAS at 13:34.

1-10-PHI 42 (13:34) C.Portis up the middle to PHI 41 for 1 yard (J.Parker; M.Patterson).

Lichtensteiger pulls but misses his block on the RDE.

2-9-PHI 41 (12:56) D.McNabb pass incomplete deep left to S.Moss.

Lichtensteiger is overwhelmed by the RDE and carried back into McNabb’s face.

3-9-PHI 41 (12:49) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short right to C.Cooley to PHI 34 for 7 yards (S.Bradley). PENALTY on PHI-E.Hobbs, Illegal Contact, 5 yards, enforced at PHI 41 - No Play.

1-10-PHI 36 (12:16) D.McNabb pass deep left intended for J.Galloway INTERCEPTED by N.Allen at PHI 7. N.Allen to PHI 23 for 16 yards (R.Torain).

Can’t figure this one out. The LDE beats both Brown and Cooley to the outside so McNabb is hurried, but he is still able to step into his throw so I don’t think that’s an excuse here – McNabb throws it about 8 yards short of Galloway who is running a post into the end zone.

Philadelphia Eagles at 12:04

1-10-PHI 23 (12:04) K.Kolb pass incomplete short right to O.Schmitt.

Landry blitzes off the edge and when a RB tries to pick him up Landry tosses him to the ground, then pressures Kolb and forces him to throw it away.

2-10-PHI 23 (11:58) (Shotgun) K.Kolb pass incomplete short right to D.Jackson.

The LG and LT cut Haynesworth and Orakpo, hoping Kolb will get the ball out quickly to one of his many curl routes. He doesn’t and Haynesworth and Orakpo recover their footing and force a dumpoff to a WR who breaks to the flat, but it is dropped.

3-10-PHI 23 (11:53) (Shotgun) K.Kolb pass incomplete deep left to J.Maclin (K.Moore).

Haynesworth ties up three linemen, allowing Alexander (the other DT) to stunt behind him and get into the backfield. Kolb avoid him and steps up to escape, but tries to force a sideline throw downfield rather than taking an open dumpoff and risks an interception.

4-10-PHI 23 (11:44) S.Rocca punts 59 yards to WAS 18, Center-J.Dorenbos. B.Banks ran ob at WAS 24 for 6 yards (M.Fokou).

Washington Redskins at 11:34

1-10-WAS 24 (11:34) C.Portis right end to WAS 28 for 4 yards (A.Samuel).

2-6-WAS 28 (10:56) R.Torain up the middle to WAS 25 for -3 yards (S.Bradley, B.Bunkley).

Brown and Davis are occupied with the RDE and a blitzing OLB, and there is no FB in the backfield to account for the blitzing safety.

3-9-WAS 25 (10:13) (Shotgun) D.McNabb scrambles right end to WAS 37 for 12 yards.

LDE drops into coverage (on Santana, believe it or not) while two LBs blitz on the opposite side. Cooley does a good job on a DB who blitzes from the offensive right, while Torain picks up the two blitzers from the left and impedes them both enough for McNabb to escape up the middle.

1-10-WAS 37 (9:27) D.McNabb pass incomplete short right to C.Cooley.

Bootleg gets blown up because the playside OLB recognizes it early (maybe because the Redskins run bootlegs constantly) so McNabb can’t get into his rollout and has to whip the ball out quickly, too hard and low for Cooley in the flat.

2-10-WAS 37 (9:23) R.Torain right end to WAS 42 for 5 yards (A.Dixon).

The counter is almost disrupted because Rabach is pushed into the backfield and Torain cuts right into him, but he bounces around him and then puts a move on a DB who had him squared up at the LOS.

3-5-WAS 42 (8:40) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass incomplete short left to A.Armstrong (E.Hobbs).

Lichtensteiger is usually good at adjusting to blitzes, but he gets beat on this one. The DLs line up with a big split – the RDE is way out at a 6-technique spot across from Cooley on the offensive left, while the nearest DT is on Cooley’s right shoulder. This must automatically create doubts about what Lichtensteiger and Brown will be responsible for. An LB attacks the gap between the two and splits them, but the real damage comes when the RDE crosses behind him and runs through the A gap, which was vacated when Lichtensteiger turned outside on the LB. Torain is in position to save the day but fails to see the RDE coming and McNabb is pressured into a bad throw.

4-5-WAS 42 (8:35) J.Bidwell punts 47 yards to PHI 11, Center-N.Sundberg. D.Jackson to PHI 19 for 8 yards (M.Sellers).

Philadelphia Eagles at 8:26

1-10-PHI 19 (8:26) (Shotgun) K.Kolb pass short left to M.Bell to PHI 20 for 1 yard (C.Rogers). FUMBLES (C.Rogers), and recovers at PHI 21. M.Bell pushed ob at PHI 24 for 3 yards (K.Moore).

The RB takes an easy swing pass but Rogers sees it early and abandons his coverage to close and dive at the RBs legs at the LOS, flipping him and causing a fumble.

2-5-PHI 24 (7:50) (Shotgun) K.Kolb pass short left to J.Maclin to PHI 39 for 15 yards (P.Buchanon).

1-10-PHI 39 (7:16) K.Kolb scrambles left end to WAS 29 for 32 yards (L.Alexander). PENALTY on PHI-J.Peters, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at PHI 39 - No Play.

Orakpo beats the LT with a speed rush and is only slowed down by the hold.

1-20-PHI 29 (6:46) L.McCoy up the middle to PHI 41 for 12 yards (L.Fletcher).

Once again an opponent realizes that it’s pretty easy to run up the middle if the Redskins only line up with one defensive lineman. Haynesworth is in the offensive left A gap, and the next linemen is Andre Carter with his hand on the ground well outside the RT. The only Redskin in front of the right part of the offensive line is Alexander, who is standing up and tries to drop into pass coverage, which of course allows him to be easily carried downfield to open up a big hole. Then the gain gets better when the slot receiver puts a solid block on DeAngelo Hall and Fletcher takes a bad angle

2-8-PHI 41 (6:12) K.Kolb pass short right to O.Schmitt to WAS 41 for 18 yards (D.Hall; L.Fletcher).

1-10-WAS 41 (5:28) K.Kolb pass incomplete short right to L.McCoy.

One of the sloppier screens you will ever see. The guards try to set up the blocks, but both fail at blocking Alexander and Fletcher, who are closing unimpeded, meaning McCoy loses nothing by dropping the ball that hits him right in the chest.

2-10-WAS 41 (5:24) (Shotgun) L.McCoy up the middle to WAS 38 for 3 yards (L.Landry, L.Fletcher).

Haynesworth again abandons his gap trying to get into the backfield, and the Eagles run right through it.

3-7-WAS 38 (4:43) (Shotgun) K.Kolb pass short middle to B.Celek to WAS 26 for 12 yards (C.Rogers; K.Moore).

Eagles empty backfield. Haynesworth is only lineman in the offensive right B gap, Orakpo standing outside the RT and Chris Wilson standing outside the LT. Landry is in the middle of the field and starts walking up before the snap. Orakpo gets the RT back on his heels and overpowers him, pushing him back into Kolb’s face. Chris Wilson seemingly puts a good move on the LTE to get into the backfield, but that is actually intentional and the TE immediately takes a short pass and turns it into a 1st down because vertical routes have cleared out all the LBs and safeties.

1-10-WAS 26 (4:04) L.McCoy up the middle to WAS 21 for 5 yards (K.Golston, C.Wilson). Washington challenged the runner was down by contact ruling, and the play was REVERSED. L.McCoy up the middle to WAS 21 for 5 yards (C.Wilson). FUMBLES (C.Wilson), RECOVERED by WAS. Moore at WAS 21. K.Moore to WAS 21 for no gain (T.Herremans).

Washington Redskins at 4:00

1-10-WAS 21 (4:00) R.Torain left tackle to WAS 23 for 2 yards (Q.Mikell, M.Patterson).

Will Montgomery loses his feet so the DT is able to throw him aside and hit Torain as he enters the hole, although he would have been stopped dead in his tracks by the safety that was coming in unblocked.

2-8-WAS 23 (3:26) R.Torain left guard to WAS 24 for 1 yard (T.Cole).

Montgomery tries to pull at trap the RDE, but the guy just gets around and gets he arm around Torain from behind.  The offensive line just fails on this whole possession.

3-7-WAS 24 (2:39) (Shotgun) PENALTY on WAS-S.Heyer, False Start, 5 yards, enforced at WAS 24 - No Play.

See?

3-12-WAS 19 (2:16) (Shotgun) D.McNabb sacked at WAS 18 for -1 yards (E.Sims).

Well for once instead of a naked bootleg McNabb rolls out behind a line that is moving the same way he is. Just be different, I guess. Torain is well positioned to block the backside RDE but gets beaten by a stutter step and whiffs, and also McNabb is unable to complete his rollout because Cooley, at RTE, is overwhelmed by the LDE. He tries to escape up the middle and then to the outside, but the Eagles defense closes.

4-13-WAS 18 (1:50) J.Bidwell punts 43 yards to PHI 39, Center-N.Sundberg, downed by WAS-R.Doughty.

3.2 seconds. Unacceptably short, but takes a lucky bounce for an extra 15 yards.

Philadelphia Eagles at 1:34

1-10-PHI 39 (1:34) K.Kolb pass short left to L.McCoy to PHI 38 for -1 yards (D.Hall).

A screen, but the blockers fail to get set up so McCoy is facing a wall of Redskins. He reverses and takes it all the way back across the field, but Hall is there waiting for him.

2-11-PHI 38 (:59) L.McCoy up the middle to PHI 40 for 2 yards (L.Fletcher).

Fletcher avoids an attempted second level block by the RG and makes the stop clean.

3-9-PHI 40 (:21) (Shotgun) K.Kolb sacked at PHI 37 for -3 yards (A.Carter). FUMBLES (A.Carter), recovered by PHI-W.Justice at PHI 33. W.Justice to PHI 33 for no gain (A.Haynesworth).

Carter beats the RT to the outside, then when Kolb tries to escape the pocket he manages to spin around and land a hard hit from behind, which forces the fumble.
