Lowering expectations for Jammal Brown

I have yet to find anyone, on the internet or in person, who isn't happy with the trade for Saints offensive tackle Jammal Brown.  After all the offseason activity that had already taken place, right tackle was quite clearly one of the biggest remaining needs.  However, some people seem a bit too convinced that the Redskins have landed a stud tackle for the forseeable future.  I like the move too, but I'm going to try to temper expectations a bit because its the kind of annoying thing I do.

Here's three reasons we shouldn't get too excited about this trade:

Thanks for making me look bad, Albert

For the past several months most of what has been written about Albert Haynesworth has been unnecessary. He said straight up that he would not attend any of the voluntary activities. And yet every day he was absent, it was somehow news. The media, desperate for anything to write about during minicamps, would indignantly exclaim "Albert's still not here! But he makes so much money!" This reminded me of the old SNL news reports that Franco was "still dead." My reaction was always, "We already knew that. Wake me up if he doesn't show up for the mandatory stuff." I said this on the assumption that he would be here for the mandatory stuff.

Oops.

Soccer

First of all, the avoidance of a "futbol" pun in the title was a matter of principle, because I'm a curmudgeon that way.

For most of my life I considered soccer's appeal to be a total mystery. But I have been making a real, honest effort to get into it this time around and I have to say it's hooked me a little. I don't know if its enough to hold my interest beyond the World Cup, but honestly I kind of hope it is.
