Redskins @ Eagles 2nd quarter review

First quarter review is here.

SECOND QUARTER

4-13-WAS 31 (15:00) D.Akers 49 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-J.Dorenbos, Holder-S.Rocca.
WAS 14 PHI 3, 10 plays, 43 yards, 4:52 drive, 0:05 elapsed

D.Akers kicks 70 yards from PHI 30 to end zone, Touchback.

Washington Redskins at 14:55
1-10-WAS 20 (14:55) D.McNabb pass short right to C.Cooley to WAS 26 for 6 yards (B.Graham).

This screen should have been a big gain. The LDE drops into coverage because all 3 LBs blitz to the opposite side. Jammal Brown is the only blocker here and has the LDE lined up but just misses his block and Cooley is taken down after a moderate gain with a lot of open field in front of him.

2-4-WAS 26 (14:20) C.Portis up the middle to WAS 32 for 6 yards (T.Cole).

1-10-WAS 32 (13:46) D.McNabb pass incomplete short left to J.Galloway.

The DT brushes aside Casey Rabach, and the backfield is unable to help out because Portis has to account for a safety blitzing from the offensive right and Sellers helps out Heyer with a chip before releasing into the flat. But McNabb nicely sidesteps and steps up in the pocket before throwing low to Galloway.

2-10-WAS 32 (13:38) R.Torain left end to WAS 27 for -5 yards (M.Patterson).

A DB dives right through Sellers’ legs to trip up Torain and allow the rest of the defense to swarm him in the backfield.

3-15-WAS 27 (13:06) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short right to A.Armstrong ran ob at PHI 16 for 57 yards.

Rabach and Lichtensteiger nicely adjust to a stunt/LB blitz combo to give McNabb time. Santana is in the slot, beats his man handily off the line, and threatens the seam to tie up the safety. But the CB over Armstrong on the outside expects the safety to still be there and releases Armstrong wide open down the sideline. The pass comes over the wrong shoulder, but Armstrong still gathers it in and just plain trips to avoid an easy touchdown.

1-10-PHI 16 (12:38) C.Portis right guard to PHI 15 for 1 yard (N.Allen).

2-9-PHI 15 (12:06) D.McNabb pass short right to C.Portis to PHI 3 for 12 yards (N.Allen).

Hicks is set up nicely on the screen and clears out the first DB, then Portis outruns Rabach and splits two defenders as he crosses the first down line.

1-3-PHI 3 (11:25) B.Banks right end to PHI 3 for no gain (Q.Mikell). PENALTY on WAS-S.Heyer, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at PHI 3 - No Play.

Banks lines up as part of a trips bunch tight to the left, then sweeps across the backfield to take the pitch. Galloway blows his block on a DB, then that same guy dives and takes the legs out from under Jammal Brown, tripping up Banks. I am not at all sold on the idea of Brandon Banks playing offense.

1-13-PHI 13 (10:59) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short left to B.Banks to PHI 18 for -5 yards (D.Tapp).

And here’s why I don’t like Banks on offense. As soon as the defense sees him out there it’s obvious he’s getting the ball. He’s split to the left with Moss. The linemen sprint out to set up blocking for the screen, and Moss tries to threaten the nearest DB to draw him away from the play. But its obvious to the DB that Banks is out there for one reason, so he disregards Moss and slips past him to close on Banks as soon as he gets the ball.

2-18-PHI 18 (10:40) R.Torain up the middle to PHI 10 for 8 yards (S.Bradley, E.Sims).

Brown cuts the LDE and Santana puts a pretty good block on the slot corner, then Torain runs through the initial tackle by the MLB to pick up a good 5 yards after contact.

3-10-PHI 10 (9:57) (Shotgun) D.McNabb scrambles right tackle to PHI 8 for 2 yards (D.Tapp).

4-8-PHI 8 (9:17) G.Gano 26 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-N.Sundberg, Holder-J.Bidwell.

WAS 17 PHI 3, 11 plays, 72 yards, 5:44 drive, 5:49 elapsed

G.Gano kicks 65 yards from WAS 30 to PHI 5. E.Hobbs to PHI 25 for 20 yards (A.Armstrong).

Philadelphia Eagles at 9:11, (1st play from scrimmage 9:06)

1-10-PHI 25 (9:06) (Shotgun) K.Kolb FUMBLES (Aborted) at PHI 20, and recovers at PHI 20. K.Kolb pass incomplete to M.Bell (A.Haynesworth).

Kolb drops the shotgun snap but the pass rush is slow to get there so he is able to pick it up. Haynesworth is in at DT and runs into a C-LG double team, then the RB also puts a hit on him before releasing in to his dumpoff route – but Haynesworth keeps pushing on the linemen and works his way deep enough to get a hand up and deflect the pass.

2-10-PHI 25 (8:55) L.McCoy right end to PHI 25 for no gain (N.Sundberg).

Haynesworth fights through the LG who is attempting to slide to the right, then works down the LOS to join Lorenzo Alexander (who was actually lined up as the other DT) in the tackle. And no, long snapper Nick Sundberg did not make this play – the Philly scorer really needs to stop only looking at the second number on guys’ jerseys. In the first quarter he gave a Kedric Golston (64) tackle to H.B. Blades (54) when Blades was not on the field. But at least Blades isn’t the long snapper…

3-10-PHI 25 (8:22) (Shotgun) K.Kolb pass short left to J.Avant to PHI 42 for 17 yards (L.Fletcher).

Once again Haynesworth and Alexander line up as the two DTs, each more or less at 3-technique. And again Carter and Orakpo both rush from a standing position but this functions pretty much like a four man front. This would appear to be the new nickel formation. In this case it does not generate any pressure, and Kolb has plenty of time to let a WR beat Rocky over the middle.

1-10-PHI 42 (7:41) M.Bell up the middle to PHI 44 for 2 yards (L.Fletcher).

2-8-PHI 44 (7:07) (Shotgun) K.Kolb pass short left to O.Schmitt to WAS 44 for 12 yards (R.McIntosh; C.Rogers).

Kolb finds the FB in the flat and Buchanon closes but despite a decent tackle attempt the FB runs through him for the first down.

1-10-WAS 44 (6:26) D.Jackson right end to WAS 42 for 2 yards (L.Fletcher).

The Redskins secondary reads this end-around immediately and Rogers pursues the WR across the field, forcing him wide enough that DeAngelo Hall is able to fight through his block and make the play.

2-8-WAS 42 (5:42) (Shotgun) PENALTY on PHI-J.Peters, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at WAS 42 - No Play.

2-18-PHI 48 (5:12) K.Kolb pass short right to L.McCoy to WAS 35 for 17 yards (L.Landry).

A nicely executed screen.

3-1-WAS 35 (4:23) L.McCoy left end to WAS 34 for 1 yard (R.McIntosh).

Redskins try to clog the middle of the field. Golston and Carricker do a good job of forcing the line back, but the RB is able to sidestep them because Orakpo gets driven to the outside by the LG.

1-10-WAS 34 (3:46) (Shotgun) K.Kolb pass short middle to L.McCoy to WAS 21 for 13 yards (K.Moore).

1-10-WAS 21 (3:12) L.McCoy right end to WAS 17 for 4 yards (L.Fletcher).

The RTE keeps Carter to the inside to secure the corner, and the Eagle pull both the C and RG to take out Rocky but both Fletcher and Moore close to keep the gain modest.

2-6-WAS 17 (2:31) (Shotgun) K.Kolb pass short right to L.McCoy to WAS 13 for 4 yards (D.Hall).

Another screen, but the Eagles can’t get enough blockers out.

Two-Minute Warning

3-2-WAS 13 (2:00) (Shotgun) L.McCoy up the middle to WAS 4 for 9 yards (L.Landry). PHI-L.McCoy was injured during the play. His return is Probable.

And Haynesworth shows why the coaches don’t trust him – in attempting to break into the backfield he completely abandons any sort of gap responsibility and lets McCoy shoot up the middle, and both ILBs are victims of second-level blocks by linemen who got off the line clean.

Timeout #1 by PHI at 01:45. Injury #25 McCoy

1-4-WAS 4 (1:45) (Shotgun) M.Bell up the middle to WAS 2 for 2 yards (R.McIntosh).

Back to the standard 3-4, and to the standard 3-4 result – both Maake Kemoeatu and Kedric Golston are driven back. Eagles are in an unbalanced line with the with the usual LT shifted to the right. Carricker collapses the LT (or RT in this case… whatever) and Alexander meets the pulling LG in the backfield and crushes him.

2-2-WAS 2 (1:11) K.Kolb pass incomplete short right to B.Celek.

This is a bootleg with no fewer than four routes dragging across the end zone at various levels, but the Redkskins LBs and DBs do an excellent job of sticking with the coverage and giving Kolb nowhere to go, so he tries to force one in to the TE.

3-2-WAS 2 (1:04) L.McCoy up the middle to WAS 1 for 1 yard (M.Kemoeatu). The Replay Assistant challenged the runner broke the plane ruling, and the play was Upheld.

Golston is taken out of the gap by the LG, but Orakpo closes from the outside and Rocky recovers from an attempted cut block to stop the back short of the goal line.

Timeout #2 by PHI at 00:23.

4-1-WAS 1 (:23) (Run formation) PENALTY on PHI, Delay of Game, 5 yards, enforced at WAS 1 - No Play.

Um… oops. This proved to be very anticlimactic, as I was anticipating this key defensive stand on 4th and inches. Not that I was that upset over how it turned out.

4-6-WAS 6 (:23) D.Akers 23 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-J.Dorenbos, Holder-S.Rocca.

WAS 17 PHI 6, 16 plays, 69 yards, 8:52 drive, 14:41 elapsed

D.Akers kicks 70 yards from PHI 30 to end zone, Touchback.

Washington Redskins at 0:19, (1st play from scrimmage 0:15)

1-10-WAS 20 (:15) D.McNabb kneels to WAS 19 for -1 yards.
