Redskins vs. Packers 3rd quarter review

THIRD QUARTER

M.Crosby kicks 62 yards from GB 30 to WAS 8. B.Banks to WAS 26 for 18 yards (K.Hall).

Banks takes a hard hit from the right side and the ball pops right out, but rolls out of bounds. No replay was shown and he may well have been down before the fumble, but it does nothing to assuage my worries about Banks’ ball security.

Washington Redskins at 15:00, (1st play from scrimmage 14:56)

1-10-WAS 26 (14:56) R.Torain up the middle to WAS 28 for 2 yards (A.Hawk).

The DT maintains his feet despite Hicks’ attempt to cut him and is waiting for Torain in the hole.

2-8-WAS 28 (14:17) D.McNabb pass short right to R.Torain to WAS 33 for 5 yards (C.Peprah).

Zero blockers get in front of Torain for this screen.

3-3-WAS 33 (13:35) D.McNabb pass short middle to S.Moss to WAS 46 for 13 yards (N.Collins).

1-10-WAS 46 (12:55) D.McNabb pass incomplete deep left to J.Galloway.

In just about the least-threatening corner blitz ever, the CB over Santana on the far right is spotted by both Torain and Sellers while he’s about 15 yards away, and both set to block him and have to wait awkwardly a few seconds. McNabb has plenty of time, but Galloway is not at all open on a go route – in fact the corner is a couple steps in front of him – so McNabb plays it safe by basically throwing it away deep.

2-10-WAS 46 (12:47) R.Torain left tackle to 50 for 4 yards (A.Hawk).

Hicks completely whiffs on his second level block on the ILB; Torain lowers his head and punishes the ILB, knocking him over backwards, and then spins around to secure an acceptable gain.

3-6-50 (12:06) D.McNabb pass incomplete short middle to S.Moss.

Rabach and Lichtensteiger adjust well to a double ILB blitz. A corner blitzes through the right B gap and Keiland picks him up, but he’s not aggressive enough going out to meet the rusher and ends up engaged far enough in the backfield that he hampers McNabb’s delivery.

4-6-50 (12:02) H.Smith punts 38 yards to GB 12, Center-N.Sundberg, fair catch by T.Williams.

Green Bay Packers at 11:55

1-10-GB 12 (11:55) A.Rodgers pass incomplete short middle to B.Jackson. Shovel pass.

Orkapo gets around the LT to the outside and ends up threatening Rodgers from behind; meanwhile Maake Kemoeatu drives straight through the center and ends up at Rodgers’s feet. Rodgers has to bounce out of the pocket where he sees the RB has leaked out for a dumpoff, but he misses him when trying to flip the ball out.

2-10-GB 12 (11:50) (Shotgun) A.Rodgers pass short left to B.Jackson pushed ob at GB 24 for 12 yards (L.Landry).

The Packers must have known the coverage because this play call was perfectly chosen to beat it. The Packers have two receivers on the offensive left. Carlos Rogers is lined up over the slot guy but blitzes through the B gap. So the slot receiver runs a slant to keep the safeties in the middle, then the RB has plenty of field in front of him for an easy blitz-beating swing pass.

1-10-GB 24 (11:26) B.Jackson left end to GB 25 for 1 yard (R.McIntosh).

Rocky meets the FB in the hole and blows him up to make the play at the line.

2-9-GB 25 (10:42) (Shotgun) B.Jackson up the middle to GB 40 for 15 yards (P.Buchanon).

Lorenzo Alexander is at DL but gets beaten by a double team, and then the C gets to the second level he and although he doesn’t put much of a block on Fletcher he forces him to hesitate enough that he has no angle.

1-10-GB 40 (9:56) (Shotgun) A.Rodgers pass deep right to D.Driver to WAS 26 for 34 yards (D.Hall).

Rodgers lets the WR go evidently thinking someone else had coverage behind him – but the TV doesn’t give us a very good look at the secondary. But this is not the first time the Packers were able to pick up a big gain due to a miscommunication in the secondary.

1-10-WAS 26 (9:11) J.Kuhn up the middle to WAS 19 for 7 yards (A.Carriker, L.Fletcher).

2-3-WAS 19 (8:33) (Shotgun) A.Rodgers pass short right to J.Kuhn to WAS 18 for 1 yard (D.Hall, R.McIntosh).

Hall is all over the FB in the flat but takes a second to wrestle him down, so Rocky decides to come and help out but Hall doesn’t appreciate it because he just misses the Packer and delivers a hard shoulder to shoulder hit on Hall.

Timeout #1 by GB at 07:47.

3-2-WAS 18 (7:47) (Shotgun) A.Rodgers pass incomplete deep right to J.Nelson (R.Doughty) [L.Landry].

Rodgers initially has time but the Redskins are all over the short curls so he has to pull the ball back down. By the time he does so Vonnie Holliday has fought his way up the middle through three blockers and created enough pressure to force Rodgers out of the pocket.

4-2-WAS 18 (7:38) M.Crosby 36 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-B.Goode, Holder-T.Masthay.

GB 13 WAS 3, 9 plays, 70 yards, 4:21 drive, 7:26 elapsed

M.Crosby kicks 54 yards from GB 30 to WAS 16, impetus ends at WAS 22. B.Westbrook to WAS 22 for 6 yards (K.Hall).

Washington Redskins at 7:34, (1st play from scrimmage 7:27)

1-10-WAS 22 (7:27) R.Torain left end pushed ob at WAS 22 for no gain (B.Jones).

This may have originally been an off tackle run but Lichtensteiger lets an ILB slip through and Torain is forced to take it outside, but is unable to do anything with it because Cooley gives up the corner to the ROLB.

2-10-WAS 22 (7:05) D.McNabb pass incomplete short right to C.Cooley.

The Packers actually blitz a safety who begins the play 13 yards off the line of scrimmage. McNabb has time but no receivers, so he rolls right and tries to force it to Cooley but throws low.

Timeout #1 by WAS at 06:58.

3-10-WAS 22 (6:58) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass incomplete deep middle to S.Moss [D.Bishop].

No one sees the ROLB blitzing off the edge and the empty backfield leaves no one to pick him up, so he comes unblocked and forces a rushed, high throw from McNabb. Lichtensteiger appeared to have the RDE accounted for, so I assume Trent Williams was supposed to be responsible for the ROLB since Cooley released directly into a pass route.

4-10-WAS 22 (6:54) H.Smith punts 51 yards to GB 27, Center-N.Sundberg. T.Williams to GB 32 for 5 yards (M.Sellers, R.Doughty).

Green Bay Packers at 6:42

1-10-GB 32 (6:42) (Shotgun) B.Jackson up the middle to GB 39 for 7 yards (L.Fletcher; A.Carriker).

Out of a four man front the usually stout Carriker gets himself turned around and is pushed way off the line by the RG and RT, knocking Fletcher out of the play as well.

2-3-GB 39 (6:00) A.Rodgers scrambles up the middle to GB 40 for 1 yard (B.Orakpo; L.Landry).

Timeout #2 by GB at 05:11.

3-2-GB 40 (5:11) (Shotgun) A.Rodgers pass short left to A.Quarless to GB 48 for 8 yards (L.Landry).

The WR goes on a slant, and the Packers send a RB to the flat to force Buchanon to pass him off – Rodgers hits him for the first down before Landry can pick up the coverage.

1-10-GB 48 (4:32) (Shotgun) A.Rodgers pass short right to G.Jennings to WAS 38 for 14 yards (L.Landry).

Rocky sacrifices himself on a blitz – he deliberately runs himself straight into the RG to keep the B gap open for Rogers on a delayed blitz. But the blitz is too delayed and Rogers has no trouble getting the ball out.

1-10-WAS 38 (3:49) B.Jackson up the middle to WAS 29 for 9 yards (K.Moore).

Andre Carter, oddly enough, is at RDE on a three man front. He is unable to control his inside gap, while Doughty makes a bad read and gets trapped on the backside of the play and the LG gets a clean shot at Fletcher.

2-1-WAS 29 (3:07) B.Jackson left end to WAS 29 for no gain (A.Carter; R.McIntosh).

Rocky takes on the LG and flat out beats him to meet the RB in the backfield.

3-1-WAS 29 (2:24) (Shotgun) A.Rodgers pass incomplete deep middle to D.Driver.

4-1-WAS 29 (2:19) M.Crosby 48 yard field goal is No Good, Wide Right, Center-B.Goode, Holder-T.Masthay.

Washington Redskins at 2:14

1-10-WAS 38 (2:14) D.McNabb pass incomplete short left to M.Sellers [C.Matthews].

McNabb tries to dump it off to Sellers but spikes it at his feet because McNabb does that sometimes just to annoy us.

2-10-WAS 38 (2:08) (Shotgun) D.McNabb scrambles up the middle to WAS 41 for 3 yards (F.Zombo).

A quarterback draw, for no particular reason. It was pretty pointless.

3-7-WAS 41 (1:27) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short middle to S.Moss to 50 for 9 yards (B.Jones).

Keiland Williams completely fails to see the blitzing ILB he’s supposed to pick up so he comes clean, but McNabb gets the ball out quickly, if a little high, for a first down.

1-10-50 (:50) D.McNabb sacked at WAS 41 for -9 yards (M.Neal).

Hicks get knocked off balance, allowing the RDE to work under and around him and take down McNabb.

2-19-WAS 41 (:19) D.McNabb pass short right to C.Cooley to WAS 47 for 6 yards (C.Woodson).

McNabb throws very high for no particular reason but Cooley makes a nice leaping catch.
