Redskins vs. Buccaneers, 2nd quarter review

Click here for the 1st quarter review.

SECOND QUARTER

1-10-TB 32 (15:00) R.Torain left end to TB 29 for 3 yards (R.Barber).

2-7-TB 29 (14:28) R.Torain left tackle to TB 27 for 2 yards (M.Bennett).

Cooley tries to kick out the RDE but can’t hold him to the outside.

3-5-TB 27 (13:48) K.Williams right guard to TB 20 for 7 yards (B.Ruud, R.Barber).

Not much space here, but Lichtensteiger turns his DT inside while Trent gets his hands on the RDE solidly enough for Keiland to slip through a very tiny hole with enough quickness that the LB cannot bring him down short of the marker.

1-10-TB 20 (13:12) R.Torain up the middle to TB 8 for 12 yards (R.Miller, C.Lynch).

Sellers cuts the RDE and Lichtensteiger gets a nice second level block on the MLB, then Torain runs through two tackles to turn a nice run into a first down.

1-8-TB 8 (12:31) R.Torain up the middle to TB 12 for -4 yards (B.Ruud).

Bucs blitz a LB and a S at the right side of the Redskins line. Montgomery whiffs on the LB and Rabach is slow to recognize the safety blitz and come off his double team of the DT.

Timeout #1 by WAS at 11:49.

2-12-TB 12 (11:49) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass incomplete short middle to S.Moss (T.Crowder). Shovel pass.

Something in the presnap alignment seems to tip off the Bucs that a shovel pass is coming.

3-12-TB 12 (11:45) K.Williams right end pushed ob at TB 6 for 6 yards (C.Lynch; R.Barber).

The LDE beats Brown, but Keiland runs through his arm tackle in the backfield.

4-6-TB 6 (11:21) G.Gano 24 yard field goal is No Good, Wide Left, Center-N.Sundberg, Holder-H.Smith.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 11:16

1-10-TB 20 (11:16) L.Blount up the middle to TB 19 for -1 yards (A.Carriker).

Carriker runs right through the RG and stuffs the play.

2-11-TB 19 (10:36) (Shotgun) E.Graham right end to TB 21 for 2 yards (B.Orakpo, R.McIntosh).

Holy crap I had to replay this three times to make sure I was seeing this right. Ma’ake Kemoeatu, our nose tackle, wins his battle with the RG and actually pushes him back far enough to interfere with the LG’s attempt to pull. How very nose tackle-ish!

3-9-TB 21 (9:56) (Shotgun) J.Freeman pass short left to S.Stroughter pushed ob at TB 32 for 11 yards (K.Moore).

1-10-TB 32 (9:29) L.Blount right end to TB 46 for 14 yards (D.Hall). FUMBLES (D.Hall), RECOVERED by WAS-D.Hall at WAS 46. D.Hall to WAS 46 for no gain (S.Stroughter).

Bryant is in at NT. He, Carriker, and Alexander allow no movement by the offensive line. The RB is forced to bounce it outside, where Hall is perfectly positioned to deny him the corner. But man does Hall ever lose that battle as Blount lowers his head and powers right through him. No shame in that, of course, and for the record in no way did Hall shy away from the contact. And of course outstanding hustle by Hall to chase the play down from behind and knock the ball out.

Washington Redskins at 9:17

1-10-WAS 46 (9:17) R.Torain left tackle to WAS 47 for 1 yard (A.Woods, S.Jones).

Armstrong is too slow getting inside to block the safety and the corner is denied.

2-9-WAS 47 (8:43) R.Torain right end to TB 49 for 4 yards (S.White, A.Woods).

3-5-TB 49 (8:04) D.McNabb pass short middle to S.Moss ran ob at TB 27 for 22 yards (E.Biggers, R.Barber).

Keiland recognizes the LB blitzing off the edge and gets a fairly solid block on him, but he is too passive in letting the blitzer come to him so the contact occurs to far in the backfield and McNabb is merely sandwiched between him and Trent, who is driven back by the RDE.

1-10-TB 27 (7:29) D.McNabb pass short left to S.Moss pushed ob at TB 6 for 21 yards (R.Barber).

The LBs bite hard on the play fake and no one is left covering Santana in the slot.

1-6-TB 6 (6:57) R.Torain up the middle to TB 6 for no gain (S.Jones, A.Hayward).

Jammal Brown doesn’t get good positioning for his block on the LB so he is carried across the backfield and forces Torain to cut into traffic.

2-6-TB 6 (6:21) D.McNabb pass short right to S.Moss to TB 4 for 2 yards (Q.Black, E.Biggers).

3-4-TB 4 (5:36) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short right to R.Torain to TB 1 for 3 yards (Q.Black).

Torain is split wide right for this, which is only odd because he lines up there rather than motioning out of the backfield.

4-1-TB 1 (4:58) D.McNabb pass short left to L.Paulsen for 1 yard, TOUCHDOWN.

Davis and Cooley are both lined up on the right, and the Bucs have their LBs shifted to that side to either cover them or counter the extra blockers on a run. Paulsen sells his run block on the RDE well – well enough that a LB to his side runs right past him on a blitz – and no one suspects he will go out for the pass until it’s too late.

G.Gano extra point is GOOD, Center-N.Sundberg, Holder-H.Smith.

TB 0 WAS 7, 8 plays, 54 yards, 4:26 drive, 10:09 elapsed

G.Gano kicks 64 yards from WAS 30 to TB 6. M.Spurlock to TB 25 for 19 yards (R.Doughty).

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 4:51, (1st play from scrimmage 4:46)

1-10-TB 25 (4:46) J.Freeman pass deep right to A.Benn to WAS 11 for 64 yards (D.Hall, K.Moore).

The three DLs (Maake at NT) get nowhere with the pass rush, and Alexander is stymied by the TE (Orakpo stays in coverage). DeAngelo Hall seems to get caught looking into the backfield and is slow to recognize that the WR is racing past him on a go route.

1-10-WAS 11 (4:00) L.Blount right guard to WAS 9 for 2 yards (R.Doughty, B.Orakpo).

The lead FB should have blocked Rocky instead of Doughty.

2-8-WAS 9 (3:16) (Shotgun) C.Williams right guard to WAS 7 for 2 yards (L.Fletcher).

Golston stand up the LG and cuts off the RB before he can shoot through the hole.

3-6-WAS 7 (2:33) (Shotgun) J.Freeman pass incomplete short middle to M.Williams.

Hall has outside leverage on the crossing route along the back of the end zone and Kareem Moore is too slow getting in position to take away the inside angle, so this by all rights should have been a touchdown – but the throw is high and Hall makes a nice play to tip it away.

4-6-WAS 7 (2:27) C.Barth 25 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-A.Economos, Holder-R.Malone.

TB 3 WAS 7, 5 plays, 68 yards, 2:29 drive, 12:38 elapsed

C.Barth kicks 48 yards from TB 30 to WAS 22. M.Sellers to WAS 40 for 18 yards (M.Stovall, P.Parker).

Washington Redskins at 2:22, (1st play from scrimmage 2:17)

1-10-WAS 40 (2:17) R.Torain right end to TB 41 for 19 yards (E.Biggers; B.Ruud).

Nice – Montgomery comes clean and takes the WLB out of the play. Lichtensteiger cuts the MLB and doesn’t take him down but slows him up enough that Torain is able to get into the secondary. Defenders are closing on Torain about 8 yards downfield but he sees a seam and turns on the speed to power through it for big yards.

Two-Minute Warning

1-10-TB 41 (2:00) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short middle to K.Williams pushed ob at TB 5 for 36 yards (B.Ruud).

The defensive line gets suckered on the screen, and the receiver’s routes clear out the LBs to create plenty of space for Keiland. Good downfield block by Lichtensteiger on a safety.

1-5-TB 5 (1:50) K.Williams up the middle to TB 2 for 3 yards (C.Lynch, E.Biggers).

Timeout #2 by WAS at 01:05.

2-2-TB 2 (1:05) K.Williams right guard to TB 2 for no gain (M.Bennett, Q.Black).

Fred Davis lets the LDE slip by him and Montgomery fails to land a block on the LB; Sellers is leading and manages to block neither of them.

Timeout #3 by WAS at 00:20.

3-2-TB 2 (:20) PENALTY on WAS-D.McNabb, Delay of Game, 5 yards, enforced at TB 2 - No Play.

3-7-TB 7 (:20) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass incomplete short left to K.Williams.

4-7-TB 7 (:14) G.Gano 25 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-N.Sundberg, Holder-H.Smith.

TB 3 WAS 10, 6 plays, 53 yards, 2:12 drive, 14:50 elapsed

G.Gano kicks 41 yards from WAS 30 to TB 29. P.Parker MUFFS catch, and recovers at TB 34. P.Parker pushed ob at TB 38 for 4 yards (B.Westbrook).

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 0:10

1-10-TB 38 (:10) J.Freeman kneels to TB 37 for -1 yards.
