1st quarter review is here.
SECOND QUARTER
4-1-NYG 42 (15:00) M.Dodge punts 53 yards to WAS 5, Center-Z.DeOssie, downed by NYG-D.Thomas.
Washington Redskins at 14:49
1-10-WAS 5 (14:49) D.McNabb pass deep middle to A.Armstrong to WAS 23 for 18 yards (A.Rolle) [C.Webster].
This one was close. Both CBs blitz. Davis picks up the one on the offensive right and angles him upfield but fails to get a solid block on him. The second slows up because he thought he was going to get blocked by Santana who was headed toward him on the fake end around – I’m sure he will get chewed out for that. Both CBs are inches away from McNabb when he gets the ball out.
1-10-WAS 23 (14:18) J.Davis right end to WAS 22 for -1 yards (J.Goff).
Montgomery fails to get out to the MLB.
2-11-WAS 22 (13:45) D.McNabb pass short right to L.Paulsen pushed ob at WAS 31 for 9 yards (M.Boley).
Paulsen was able to get open in the flat because he missed his cut block on the LDE so badly. Whatever works I guess.
3-2-WAS 31 (13:15) (Shotgun) K.Williams left end to WAS 33 for 2 yards (C.Canty).
There’s potential here with a kickout by Heyer and solid blocks on the DBs by Moss and Roydell (both aligned to the left), but Rabach can’t keep the DT in the middle of the field and he tracks Davis Keiland down the field to make the play.
1-10-WAS 33 (12:36) D.McNabb pass incomplete short right to C.Cooley.
2-10-WAS 33 (12:29) J.Davis up the middle to WAS 41 for 8 yards (A.Rolle).
Nice block by Fred Davis – he gets hold of the LDE, drives him inside, and even takes him to the ground. Meanwhile Armstrong does a good job on the LCB to keep the corner open for James Davis.
3-2-WAS 41 (11:51) (Shotgun) D.McNabb sacked at WAS 37 for -4 yards (J.Pierre-Paul).
Nice and simple – Heyer beat around the edge one on one.
4-6-WAS 37 (11:38) H.Smith punts 44 yards to NYG 19, Center-N.Sundberg, fair catch by D.Reynaud.

New York Giants at 11:28
1-10-NYG 19 (11:28) E.Manning pass deep right to D.Hagan to NYG 36 for 17 yards (P.Buchanon, L.Alexander).
Carriker could be really good with just a little bit of speed – he gets through the line and reads the bootleg, but lacks the speed to pose any serious threat to Manning.
1-10-NYG 36 (10:45) E.Manning pass short left to B.Pascoe to NYG 45 for 9 yards (R.McIntosh).
Kareem Moore is still playing a strong safety role and I still have no idea why. He telegraphs a blitz, the line easily adjusts, and he runs smack in to the LT and gets a chip from the FB.
2-1-NYG 45 (10:09) B.Jacobs right guard to NYG 49 for 4 yards (R.Doughty).
The C and RG open a hole between Maake and Golston. Doughty hits Jacobs a yard short of the first down but is of course bowled over. Puzzled by Rocky’s reaction on this – he is initially tracking the pulling LG, but recovers from that and seems to read the hole correctly… but seems to hesitate rather than joining Doughty in the tackle.
1-10-NYG 49 (9:24) B.Jacobs right end to WAS 41 for 10 yards (R.Doughty, K.Moore).
Carriker penetrates to the inside, and the only real effect is to leave the corner exposed. The RT is able to pull outside and then seal Fletcher in, while the TE, who lined up in the slot, kicks out Alexander.
1-10-WAS 41 (8:40) E.Manning pass short left to D.Hagan to WAS 26 for 15 yards (P.Buchanon) [K.Golston].
Comeback on Buchanon… the Giants have zeroed in on their target.
1-10-WAS 26 (7:56) E.Manning pass short right to B.Pascoe pushed ob at WAS 14 for 12 yards (L.Fletcher).
Alexander beaten badly into the flat by the FB.
1-10-WAS 14 (7:21) A.Bradshaw right tackle to WAS 9 for 5 yards (P.Daniels, B.Orakpo).
The center, with no help, drives our 3-4 nose tackle 3 yards off the line. That should never, ever happen but does routinely.
2-5-WAS 9 (6:38) A.Bradshaw left guard to WAS 4 for 5 yards (K.Moore).
Daniels, at RDE, is driven inside by the LT and TE. Fletcher blows up the pulling RG but Rocky is again oddly hesitant and allows himself to get picked up by the TE at the second level.
1-4-WAS 4 (5:50) E.Manning pass short middle intended for K.Boss INTERCEPTED by L.Fletcher at WAS -8. Touchback.
Doughty blitzes untouched off the left edge and forces Manning into a hasty, and bad, throw.
Washington Redskins at 5:40
1-10-WAS 20 (5:40) D.McNabb pass incomplete short middle to C.Cooley (D.Tollefson) [C.Webster].
2-10-WAS 20 (5:36) D.McNabb pass deep middle to F.Davis to WAS 38 for 18 yards (J.Goff).
1-10-WAS 38 (5:06) J.Davis left end to WAS 40 for 2 yards (B.Cofield).
2-8-WAS 40 (4:34) D.McNabb pass short left to A.Armstrong to NYG 49 for 11 yards (T.Thomas). FUMBLES (T.Thomas), RECOVERED by NYG-K.Bulluck at WAS 49. K.Bulluck ran ob at WAS 39 for 10 yards. Officially, a completion for 9 yards. Washington challenged the fumble ruling, and the play was Upheld. (Timeout #1 at 04:19.)
The Redskins just cannot cut the Giants’ athletic defensive linemen – this time its Trent who completely fails to take down the RDE. McNabb is able to get it out despite having his intended passing lane closed. Armstrong wasn’t careless with the ball – this was a good strip by the Giants.
New York Giants at 4:19
1-10-WAS 39 (4:19) PENALTY on WAS-L.Fletcher, Delay of Game, 5 yards, enforced at WAS 39 - No Play.
1-5-WAS 34 (4:19) A.Bradshaw right tackle to WAS 32 for 2 yards (L.Alexander, M.Kemoeatu).
2-3-WAS 32 (3:41) E.Manning pass short left to D.Hagan to WAS 25 for 7 yards (K.Barnes).
Second and three. So in a rather obvious short passing situation, Jim Haslett naturally calls a slow-developing blitz (the ILB trail blitz he loves but that rarely works) and has Barnes play soft coverage on the WR to give up the easy quick hook.
1-10-WAS 25 (2:59) A.Bradshaw right end to WAS 25 for no gain (R.Doughty).
This was a play worthy of Doughty’s nice 2009 season. He starts 8 yards off the line but reads the play and takes the perfect angle to stuff the RB before he can make the corner.
2-10-WAS 25 (2:19) A.Bradshaw left guard to WAS 10 for 15 yards (K.Moore, R.McIntosh).
Golston loses discipline again, trying to go outside on a pass rush and opening a gaping hole. Orakpo is kicked out to the same side and Maake, obviously, is neutralized by one blocker, so the FB gets a free shot on Fletcher to open up the big run.
Two-Minute Warning
1-10-WAS 10 (2:00) A.Bradshaw right tackle for 10 yards, TOUCHDOWN.
Redskins run that damn ILB trail blitz to the offensive left, meaning Rocky is unable to take on the lead FB when they run through the right B gap. The FB neutralizes Doughty to spring the RB, who then simply runs over Kareem Moore.
L.Tynes extra point is GOOD, Center-Z.DeOssie, Holder-S.Rosenfels.
WAS 0 NYG 21, 5 plays, 39 yards, 1 penalty, 2:24 drive, 13:05 elapsed
L.Tynes kicks 61 yards from NYG 30 to WAS 9. B.Banks to WAS 21 for 12 yards (B.Jackson).
I would merely like to point out the stunningly blatant formation of a three man wedge on this kickoff. Why did they bother making that rule if they don’t bother to enforce it? I would rather they just scrap it because on the rare occasions it is called it’s just arbitrary.
Washington Redskins at 1:55, (1st play from scrimmage 1:49)
1-10-WAS 21 (1:49) D.McNabb pass short right to C.Cooley ran ob at WAS 34 for 13 yards.
1-10-WAS 34 (1:44) D.McNabb pass incomplete deep left to C.Cooley (D.Grant) [O.Umenyiora].
Decent pickup by Keiland to neutralize a corner blitz.
2-10-WAS 34 (1:38) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short right to K.Williams to WAS 35 for 1 yard (B.Cofield).
The LB saw the screen coming a mile away and avoided the blockers.
3-9-WAS 35 P8 (1:15) (No Huddle, Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short middle to C.Cooley to WAS 44 for 9 yards (D.Grant, C.Webster).
McNabb barely gets the ball out as Brown is completely outclassed by the LDE.
1-10-WAS 44 (:49) (No Huddle, Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short middle to A.Armstrong to 50 for 6 yards (K.Phillips).
Timeout #2 by WAS at 00:43.
2-4-50 (:43) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass incomplete short middle to A.Armstrong [J.Tuck].
Again – Jammal Brown simple cannot stand up to Justin Tuck. Armstrong had to reach for this ball, but he probably should have come down with it.
3-4-50 (:37) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass incomplete short left to S.Moss (A.Ross).
4-4-50 (:32) H.Smith punts 33 yards to NYG 17, Center-N.Sundberg, out of bounds.

New York Giants at 0:22
1-10-NYG 17 (:22) E.Manning kneels to NYG 16 for -1 yards
