Redskins vs. Buccaneers, 3rd quarter review

1st quarter review
2nd quarter

THIRD QUARTER

C.Barth kicks 40 yards from TB 30 to WAS 30. C.Wilson MUFFS catch, RECOVERED by TB-A.Hayward at WAS 34. A.Hayward to WAS 34 for no gain (K.Golston).

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 15:00, (1st play from scrimmage 14:55)

1-10-WAS 34 (14:55) L.Blount up the middle to WAS 34 for no gain (R.Doughty).

The RB slips as he tries to cut, but he just would have run smack into Lorenzo Alexander anyway.

2-10-WAS 34 (14:19) J.Freeman pass short middle to J.Gilmore to WAS 29 for 5 yards (B.Orakpo). PENALTY on TB-J.Lee, Offensive Holding, 9 yards, enforced at WAS 34 - No Play.

Timeout #1 by TB at 13:44.

2-19-WAS 43 (13:44) (Shotgun) J.Freeman pass short right to C.Williams to WAS 40 for 3 yards (L.Fletcher).

Orakpo lines up over the slot receiver and the LT doesn’t recognize him as a pass rush threat until it’s too late, so Freeman is forced to take the dumpoff in the flat.

3-16-WAS 40 (13:04) (Shotgun) J.Freeman pass short middle to S.Stroughter to WAS 35 for 5 yards (D.Hall, V.Holliday). PENALTY on WAS-R.McIntosh, Defensive Offside, 5 yards, enforced at WAS 40 - No Play.

The blockers are all concentrated in the middle of the field, so Hall has no trouble making the tackle on the screen.

3-11-WAS 35 (12:41) (Shotgun) J.Freeman pass short right to C.Williams to WAS 26 for 9 yards (R.Doughty).

4-2-WAS 26 (11:54) C.Barth 44 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-A.Economos, Holder-R.Malone.

TB 6 WAS 10, 4 plays, 8 yards, 1 penalty, 3:12 drive, 3:12 elapsed

C.Barth kicks 66 yards from TB 30 to WAS 4. B.Banks to WAS 25 for 21 yards (E.Mack, S.Stroughter).

Washington Redskins at 11:48, (1st play from scrimmage 11:41)

1-10-WAS 25 (11:41) R.Torain left tackle to WAS 26 for 1 yard (M.Bennett).

A safety creeps towards the line and then blasts through the gap, wrecking the zone blocking.

2-9-WAS 26 (11:03) R.Torain left end to WAS 26 for no gain (R.Miller; G.Hayes).

On a stretch to the left Rabach is controlling his DT decently, until Montgomery is taken to the ground and knocks his legs out from behind.

3-9-WAS 26 (10:21) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short middle to A.Armstrong to WAS 31 for 5 yards (Q.Black).

4-4-WAS 31 (9:50) H.Smith punts 38 yards to TB 31, Center-N.Sundberg. M.Spurlock to TB 39 for 8 yards (L.Alexander).

3.3 second hang time. Hunter Smith did not get cut because he dropped the snap on an extra point – he got cut for his consistently terrible hang times.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 9:40

1-10-TB 39 (9:40) A.Benn left end pushed ob at WAS 44 for 17 yards (D.Hall). End around

All the LBs and Kareem Moore (lined up in the box) bite on the initial play action and are easily beat on the end around.

1-10-WAS 44 (9:11) L.Blount up the middle to WAS 44 for no gain (R.Doughty; L.Alexander).

Anthony Bryant makes another nose tackle play which should be routine but that we haven’t seen all year, keeping the center from getting any push and closing off the intended hole. Meanwhile Carriker stands up the RT and cuts off the cutback lane.

2-10-WAS 44 (8:31) (Shotgun) J.Freeman pass short left to C.Williams to WAS 33 for 11 yards (R.McIntosh, L.Fletcher).

1-10-WAS 33 (7:46) L.Blount left guard to WAS 30 for 3 yards (K.Golston, R.Doughty).

2-7-WAS 30 (7:06) J.Freeman sacked at WAS 34 for -4 yards (P.Daniels, K.Golston).

Daniels engages the RG, who loses his footing and Daniels puts him on his back.

3-11-WAS 34 (6:34) (Shotgun) J.Freeman pass short right to K.Winslow to WAS 23 for 11 yards (L.Fletcher).

1-10-WAS 23 (5:52) L.Blount right end to WAS 19 for 4 yards (R.Doughty).

Lorenzo Alexander is overwhelmed by a double team from the twin WRs, and keeps Fletcher from flowing to the hole.

2-6-WAS 19 (5:08) L.Blount right guard to WAS 17 for 2 yards (L.Fletcher).

Anthony Bryant is again in at nose. This is another one of those place that I probably shouldn’t need to comment on, except that the NT play from Ma’ake Kemoeatu has been so egregious throughout the year. He clogs up the middle forcing a cutback, and Fletcher beats the block of the RG to stop the play.
3-4-WAS 17 (4:22) (Shotgun) J.Freeman pass incomplete short right to M.Spurlock (L.Fletcher).

Excellent coverage by Fletcher.

4-4-WAS 17 (4:16) C.Barth 35 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-A.Economos, Holder-R.Malone.

TB 9 WAS 10, 10 plays, 44 yards, 5:29 drive, 10:49 elapsed

C.Barth kicks 49 yards from TB 30 to WAS 21. M.Sellers to WAS 31 for 10 yards (M.Stovall; V.Anderson). PENALTY on TB-E.Mack, Offside on Free Kick, 5 yards, enforced at WAS 31.

Washington Redskins at 4:11

1-10-WAS 36 (4:11) D.McNabb pass short left to F.Davis to WAS 31 for -5 yards (S.White).

Nothing messes up a screen like an unexpected zone blitz from the backside. Not because of the pressure, but because the play is predicated on the end on the other side from the getting suckered into a pass rush rather than dropping into coverage. Davis wants to feign a block on the RDE, then let him slip by and set up behind him to take the pass. But the Bucs have a LB and S blitzing, so the RDE just hangs in coverage and is of course all over Davis as soon as he gets the ball.

2-15-WAS 31 (3:21) D.McNabb pass incomplete short left to A.Armstrong (G.Hayes).

The WLB shows blitz, but then buzzes to the outside and puts himself right in the path of McNabb’s throw to Armstrong on the comeback route. I know it was disguised, but I’m amazed McNabb never saw the guy cutting off his passing lane. Should have been intercepted.

3-15-WAS 31 (3:18) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short left to S.Moss to WAS 45 for 14 yards (M.Lewis).

The Bucs line falls hard for the screen, so Santana gets room to run with Lichtensteiger, Rabach, and Montgomery leading his way downfield.

4-1-WAS 45 (2:39) H.Smith punts 35 yards to TB 20, Center-N.Sundberg, fair catch by M.Spurlock.

3.9 seconds. Once more for emphasis – the botched hold is not why Hunter got cut.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 2:32

1-10-TB 20 (2:32) J.Freeman pass short middle to M.Williams to TB 35 for 15 yards (R.McIntosh).

The LBs are briefly frozen by play action. Buchanon is playing outside position so either Orakpo or Rocky should have been responsible for taking the inside coverage on this slant route, but I’m not sure which.

1-10-TB 35 (1:52) J.Freeman pass short left to A.Benn pushed ob at TB 45 for 10 yards (P.Buchanon).

Kareem Moore blitzes off the edge, allowing the WR to easily get open in the flat and turn upfield.

1-10-TB 45 (1:20) C.Williams left tackle to TB 49 for 4 yards (L.Fletcher, P.Buchanon).

Orakpo gets kicked out and Fletcher is held to keep him from filling the hole. The safeties aren’t on camera so it seems Buchanon is pretty much the last line of defense here and he makes a nice solid tackle to prevent a big gain.

2-6-TB 49 (:40) J.Freeman pass short right to A.Benn to WAS 46 for 5 yards (R.Doughty, L.Alexander).
