SECOND QUARTER

3-6-WAS 39 (15:00) (Shotgun) PENALTY on WAS-W.Montgomery, False Start, 5 yards, enforced at WAS 39 - No Play.

3-11-WAS 34 (15:00) (Shotgun) R.Grossman pass short middle to R.Williams to WAS 44 for 10 yards (K.Morrison).

Jaguars a playing a soft zone, giving up the completion to Roydell and closing to keep him from getting the first down. He seems a bit slow turning upfield – if he’d been more aggressive he just may have made it.

4-1-WAS 44 (14:24) S.Paulescu punts 35 yards to JAX 21, Center-N.Sundberg. K.Osgood to JAX 21 for no gain (V.Harris).

3.8 seconds

Jacksonville Jaguars at 14:13

1-10-JAX 21 (14:13) R.Jennings up the middle to JAX 24 for 3 yards (A.Bryant).

Carriker penetrates from the backside but, again, isn’t quick enough to make a play in the backfield.

2-7-JAX 24 (13:31) D.Garrard pass short right to B.Bolen to JAX 39 for 15 yards (A.Carter).

Carter lines up over the slot receiver, but releases him after giving him a bump. Unfortunately there was no DB to pick the guy, but good luck figuring out who screwed up on that one.

1-10-JAX 39 (12:49) R.Jennings up the middle to JAX 41 for 2 yards (L.Fletcher). PENALTY on JAX-J.Hill, Illegal Crackback, 15 yards, enforced at JAX 39 - No Play.

Lorenzo Alexander gets his hands on the TE, then slips under and inside him to put a hit on the RB.

1-25-JAX 24 (12:49) D.Garrard pass deep middle to M.Thomas to 50 for 26 yards (K.Barnes).

1-10-50 (12:49) R.Jennings up the middle to WAS 49 for 1 yard (D.Hall).

The LDE (Darrion Scott, I think, but I can’t get a clean look at his number) and Bryant swallow up the right side of the Jaguars line, while Orakpo rides the TE to the inside to close off the hole.

2-9-WAS 49 (12:49) D.Garrard pass short left to Z.Potter to WAS 41 for 8 yards (C.Rogers).

The split end runs a slant, freezing Rocky to the inside since Rogers is playing way off the guy, so the TE is free in the flat.

3-1-WAS 41 (10:25) D.Garrard up the middle to WAS 39 for 2 yards (R.McIntosh).

Jarmon, at RDE in a four man front for short yardage, gets his shoulders turned sideways while trying to stuff the inside gap and the LT is able to move him off the line enough for the sneak to gain a first down.

1-10-WAS 39 (9:50) D.Garrard pass incomplete short right to B.Bolen.

Carter avoids getting sucked in by the play action and pursues Garrard into his bootleg, forcing a throwaway.

2-10-WAS 39 (9:45) (Shotgun) D.Garrard pass short middle to M.Thomas to WAS 31 for 8 yards (V.Holliday).

Jaguars have trips WRs to their right, and on the left both Alexander and Rogers are lined up directly over the TE. It is pretty clear that Alexander is in coverage and Rogers blitzing, so the RB picks him up with no trouble at all.

3-2-WAS 31 (9:45) D.Garrard pass short right to M.Thomas to WAS 19 for 12 yards (C.Rogers).

The WR makes a fake to the outside that spins Rogers around completely, so he has no chance to recover when the route becomes a slant instead.

1-10-WAS 19 (8:23) D.Garrard pass deep middle to M.Thomas for 19 yards, TOUCHDOWN.

Barnes either thinks he has safety help nearby or gets completely fooled by a little double move – he lets the slot WR run right by him into a huge void and Macho Harris can’t close on time to knock the ball out.

J.Scobee extra point is GOOD, Center-J.Cain, Holder-A.Podlesh.

WAS 10 JAX 7, 10 plays, 79 yards, 5:55 drive, 6:42 elapsed

J.Scobee kicks 68 yards from JAX 30 to WAS 2, out of bounds.

Washington Redskins at 8:18

1-10-WAS 40 (8:18) R.Torain left end to WAS 39 for -1 yards (T.Alualu).

Heyer allows backside penetration by the DT.

2-11-WAS 39 (7:42) R.Grossman pass incomplete short right to R.Torain [A.Lane].

Jammal Brown holds up against the RDE initially, but then gets beaten to the inside by a spin move after Rex lingers in the pocket waiting for deep routes to develop.

3-11-WAS 39 (7:38) (Shotgun) R.Grossman pass incomplete short right to C.Cooley (Da.Smith).

4-11-WAS 39 (7:27) S.Paulescu punts 37 yards to JAX 24, Center-N.Sundberg, fair catch by M.Thomas.

3.9 seconds.

Jacksonville Jaguars at 7:24

1-10-JAX 24 (7:24) D.Garrard pass incomplete short left to J.Hill (C.Rogers).

Rogers is playing the go route so the WR pops open when he cuts back, but Rogers recovers well and closes to break up the pass.

2-10-JAX 24 (7:16) R.Jennings right end to JAX 26 for 2 yards (D.Hall).

Fletcher comes around the edge and makes a nice tackle around the RB’s legs, helped by the fact that Fletcher took down the pulling guard.

3-8-JAX 26 (6:32) (Shotgun) D.Garrard pass short middle to M.Lewis pushed ob at WAS 48 for 26 yards (K.Barnes) [A.Carter]. WAS-D.Hall was injured during the play. His return is Questionable.

Rogers telegraphs his blitz so the line easily adjusts and he runs straight into the LT. From the other side Rob Jackson swims under the RT and forces Garrard up in the pocket, where he is drilled by Carter (RDE) just after throwing.

1-10-WAS 48 (6:11) D.Karim up the middle to WAS 45 for 3 yards (K.Barnes).

Bryant gets pushed back a bit, but Holliday and Carriker are at the ends spots and pinch the gap shut behind him. Carter also does his share riding the TE inside, so with no holes the RB is forced to bounce outside and Barnes is there waiting for him.

2-7-WAS 45 (5:30) (Shotgun) D.Garrard pass incomplete deep right to B.Bolen.

3-7-WAS 45 (5:21) (Shotgun) D.Garrard pass short right to J.Hill to WAS 41 for 4 yards.

The WR sprung wide open on the crossing route – Rob Jackson had him initially but let him go – but great closing speed from Philip Buchanon keeps him from turning upfield for the first down.

4-3-WAS 41 (4:42) A.Podlesh punts 41 yards to end zone, Center-J.Cain, Touchback.

Washington Redskins at 4:36

1-10-WAS 20 (4:36) (Shotgun) R.Grossman pass short left to S.Moss to WAS 33 for 13 yards (D.Cox; D.Carey).

1-10-WAS 33 (3:57) R.Grossman pass incomplete short left to M.Sellers (K.Morrison).

Trent tries to cut the RDE, which leaves Torain responsible for a blitzing LB. He picks him up but instead of seeking the guy out and delivering a blow he sets himself to receive one, so the contact is too far in the backfield and the LB is able to tip Rex’s pass.

2-10-WAS 33 (3:52) R.Grossman pass deep right to S.Moss to JAX 29 for 38 yards (D.Carey).

I don’t think Cooley was meant to be one on one against the RDE as Trent unnecessarily helped Lichtensteiger double a DT. Cooley almost gets beaten around the edge, and Heyer is being pushed back from the other side, but Rex gets the throw out.

1-10-JAX 29 (3:04) R.Grossman pass incomplete deep left to S.Moss.

2-10-JAX 29 (2:57) R.Torain right end pushed ob at JAX 17 for 12 yards (R.Mathis).

Heyer pulls to the outside, gets his hands on the LDE who was initially dropping into coverage (there was a blitz from the backside) and carries him outside, thus allowing Torain to cut upfield behind him. A very good downfield block by Anthony Armstrong turns it from a nice run into a first down.

1-10-JAX 17 (2:32) R.Grossman pass deep left intended for S.Moss INTERCEPTED by D.Cox at JAX -6. Touchback. Washington challenged the incomplete pass ruling, and the play was Upheld. (Timeout #1 at 02:25.)

This would have been a big time throw, and Rex simply doesn’t have the arm strength to fire this kind of deep route to the sideline.

Jacksonville Jaguars at 2:25

1-10-JAX 20 (2:25) R.Jennings up the middle to JAX 22 for 2 yards (V.Holliday). PENALTY on JAX-E.Monroe, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at JAX 20 - No Play.

Holliday avoids a chip from the LT, then drives through and under the RG to trip up the RB.

Two-Minute Warning

1-20-JAX 10 (2:00) R.Jennings up the middle to JAX 13 for 3 yards (V.Holliday).

Holliday explodes into a C-RG double team, standing them up in the backfield, then sheds off them to wrap his arms around the RB. There were still three yards to be had because there was only one other lineman on the field (Jarmon) and they were in one of Haslett’s very wide splits that leaves the center of the field open.

Timeout #2 by WAS at 01:55.

2-17-JAX 13 (1:55) (Shotgun) D.Garrard up the middle to JAX 20 for 7 yards (B.Westbrook).

Timeout #3 by WAS at 01:48.

3-10-JAX 20 (1:48) (Shotgun) D.Garrard pass short right to R.Jennings to JAX 20 for no gain (B.Westbrook).

Westbrook is in man coverage against the slot WR on a slant, but he reads the screen early and races past the three blockers to trip up the RB.

Timeout #1 by JAX at 01:05.

4-10-JAX 20 (1:05) A.Podlesh punts 47 yards to WAS 33, Center-J.Cain. B.Banks to WAS 36 for 3 yards (S.Considine; T.Brackenridge).

Washington Redskins at 0:54

1-10-WAS 36 (:54) (Shotgun) R.Grossman pass incomplete short middle to C.Cooley.

Montgomery doesn’t see the blitz coming so a DB is in Rex’s face as he throws, nonetheless he hits Cooley in the hands over the middle and it’s just dropped (again).

2-10-WAS 36 (:50) (Shotgun) R.Grossman pass incomplete short right to K.Williams.

3-10-WAS 36 (:45) (Shotgun) R.Grossman pass incomplete deep right to T.Austin (J.Mincey).

Two LBs blitz from the offensive left. Keiland is aligned to the right and slow to react, so Lichtensteiger gets stuck with both of them and, given the circumstances, does a decent enough job of slowing them both down and giving Rex a chance to make his (ill-advised) throw.

4-10-WAS 36 (:39) S.Paulescu punts 49 yards to JAX 15, Center-N.Sundberg. M.Thomas to JAX 23 for 8 yards (B.Westbrook).

3.7 seconds

Jacksonville Jaguars at 0:28

1-10-JAX 23 (:28) (Shotgun) D.Garrard sacked at JAX 10 for -13 yards (sack split by J.Jarmon and A.Carter). The Replay Assistant challenged the fumble ruling, and the play was Upheld.

Jaguars are trying to set up a screen to the left, but Holliday, even though he is “supposed” to get by the RG, does it forcefully enough that the blocker and RB are slowed down getting into position. Jackson, initially rushing from ROLB, deserves credit for recognizing the screen earlier and moving to cover the RB, further delaying Garrard’s throw. Jarmon is at NT and gets through the RG’s faux-block with quite a bit of momentum, and Carter just plain beats the RT, who was actually trying to block him for real. Together they take advantage of the play’s delayed development and bury Garrard.
