Redskins-Giants 3rd quarter game review

First quarter review is here, second quarter review is here. As before the play by play is taken from the NFL gamebook.

Off we go:

Third Quarter

G.Gano kicks 68 yards from WAS 35 to NYG -3. D.Thomas to NYG 18 for 21 yards (L.Alexander).

New York Giants at 15:00, (1st play from scrimmage 14:54)

1-10-NYG 18  (14:54) A.Bradshaw right end to NYG 22 for 4 yards (R.McIntosh, R.Kerrigan).

2-6-NYG 22   (14:19) PENALTY on NYG-H.Nicks, False Start, 5 yards, enforced at NYG 22 - No Play.

2-11-NYG 17  (13:54) (Shotgun) A.Bradshaw right end to NYG 18 for 1 yard (L.Fletcher; R.Kerrigan).

Great play by Fletcher, who reads the shotgun draw early and beats the pulling guard to the outside to make the play.

3-10-NYG 18   (13:10) (Shotgun) E.Manning pass short right intended for H.Nicks INTERCEPTED by R.Kerrigan at NYG 9. R.Kerrigan for 9 yards, TOUCHDOWN.

Kerrigan – who remember is playing linebacker for the first time in a regular season game, does a fantastic job not only of seeing the cut block coming and shoving the blocker to the ground, but of maintaining his balance sufficiently that he could time a leap on Manning’s throw and knock the ball in the air. He then has great awareness to keep track of the ball and make the catch for the touchdown. Just an absolutely outstanding play.

Washington Redskins at 13:03

G.Gano extra point is GOOD, Center-N.Sundberg, Holder-S.Rocca.

NYG 14 WAS 21, 0 plays, 9 yards, 0:00 drive , 1:57 elapsed

G.Gano kicks 65 yards from WAS 35 to end zone, Touchback.

New York Giants at 13:03

1-10-NYG 20 (13:03) B.Jacobs right end to NYG 21 for 1 yard (C.Neild; K.Fox).

Kerrigan collides with the fullback two yards deep and maintains his position and footing, which means Jacobs is forced to make cuts in the backfield and Golson has time to fight through the blocking and make the play from backside pursuit.

2-9-NYG 21  (12:16) E.Manning sacked at NYG 15 for -6 yards (C.Neild).

Chris Nield admitted after the game that he went through the wrong gap on this play, and knowing that’s it’s easy to see – I would have thought it was a sloppy stunt but for his confession since Golston had to leap behind him and gave him a shove as he did so. He initially goes to his knees but regains his footing and benefits from a failure of alertness from Brandon Jacobs, who is notoriously poor in pass protection, and has a straight shot at Manning who is forced to step up into him due to edge pressure from Orakpo’s speed rush.

3-15-NYG 15 (11:41) (Shotgun) E.Manning pass short middle to A.Bradshaw to NYG 25 for 10 yards (R.McIntosh; O.Atogwe).

The Giants set up the screen nicely and have three linemen barreling down the field at the LBs and secondary by the time Bradshaw receives the pass, but Fletcher recovers from getting shoved to the ground and trips him up, allowing the rest of the defense to converge.

4-5-NYG 25    (11:04) S.Weatherford punts 59 yards to WAS 16, Center-Z.DeOssie. B.Banks pushed ob at WAS 27 for 11 yards (Z.DeOssie).
PENALTY on WAS-R.Jackson, Illegal Block Above the Waist, 10 yards, enforced at WAS 25.

I have absolutely no idea what Rob Jackson was thinking here – he is pursuing a Giant downfield and simply hurls himself into the guy’s back, which is not only illegal but it sends the Giant flying right into Terence Austin, and then Jackson himself hits Banks shoulder high at full speed. I have a feeling Danny Smith had something to say about this after the play.

Washington Redskins at 10:49

1-10-WAS 15 (10:49) T.Hightower right end to WAS 17 for 2 yards (M.Kiwanuka, K.Phillips).

2-8-WAS 17 (10:13) R.Grossman pass deep right to F.Davis pushed ob at WAS 42 for 25 yards (K.Phillips).

Chester gets pushed into the pocket and the DT gets his hand in the air, but despite the pocket closing in on him Rex is able to slip a throw out to Davis, who is wide open after a blown coverage.

1-10-WAS 42 (9:47) R.Grossman pass incomplete deep middle to S.Moss.

Rex has plenty of time as the fake handoff and end around slow the pass rush, but he just misses on the throw.

2-10-WAS 42 (9:39) T.Hightower left end to WAS 43 for 1 yard (D.Grant).

Trent gets pushed back by the DE and Terrence Austin, from the slot is entirely too passive in this block. He stops at the line of scrimmage and lets the DB initiate the contact with him, so he ends up behind the LOS as well. Running around these two failed blocks means it takes too long for Hightower to cut upfield so the safety – who Cooley is too slow to intercept – can close and make the play.

3-9-WAS 43 (8:54) (Shotgun) R.Grossman pass incomplete deep left to A.Armstrong (K.Phillips).
Timeout #1 by NYG at 08:39.

RDE Jason Pierre-Paul absolutely destroys Trent with a swim move, and the Hightower fails to line him up properly for a block.  But Rex senses the pressure, escapes the pocket, and stops himself before reaching the LOS to take a shot downfield. Armstrong gets it in his hand but loses it on the way to the ground – another example of a pass that your deep threat just needs to be able to come down with.

4-9-WAS 43  (8:39) S.Rocca punts 40 yards to NYG 17, Center-N.Sundberg, fair catch by D.Hixon.
PENALTY on NYG-D.Martin, Offensive Holding, 8 yards, enforced at NYG 17.

Due to the 4.6 second hang time, Lorenzo Alexander is right in the returner’s face to force the fair catch. For perspective, in 2010 it was the rare Redskins punt that reached it’s fourth second at all.

New York Giants at 8:34

1-10-NYG 9  (8:34) E.Manning pass deep middle to J.Ballard to 50 for 41 yards (R.Doughty).

The four man rush gets absolutely nowhere and Manning has plenty of time to let the deep routes develop. Fletcher is stuck covering a TE much farther downfield than a LB should have to go, and his safety help, Doughty, is a split second to slow arriving because he was held by a complementary sideline route.

1-10-50 (7:56) E.Manning pass short right to M.Manningham pushed ob at WAS 42 for 8 yards (D.Hall).

2-2-WAS 42  (7:26) E.Manning pass short right to H.Nicks to WAS 40 for 2 yards (D.Hall; R.Kerrigan).

I continue to be impressed with how quickly Kerrigan is picking up the linebacker position. He immediately sees that Manning is throwing a quick hitch and races to the outside, where he is in position to clean up after Hall’s low tackle only trips up Manningham.

1-10-WAS 40 (6:48) A.Bradshaw left tackle to WAS 37 for 3 yards (L.Fletcher, S.Bowen).

Nice job by Bowen shedding off his blocker and forcing the RB to cut back in to traffic.

2-7-WAS 37 (6:05) (Shotgun) E.Manning pass incomplete deep left to H.Nicks.

Barnes is tabbed to blitz from the slot and gets overeager and starts before the snap, which of course tips everyone off and Manning adjusts the coverage so that there is a tight end waiting for him. Josh Wilson has good coverage down the sideline.

3-7-WAS 37  (5:59) (Shotgun) E.Manning pass short middle to M.Manningham to WAS 31 for 6 yards (J.Wilson).

Very nice play by Wilson. He runs around the rub by the slot WR and tracks Manningham on the cross, and is right on top of him to make the tackle short of the sticks.

4-1-WAS 31  (5:17) A.Bradshaw right tackle to WAS 31 for no gain (L.Fletcher; J.Wilson).

Cofield attacks the offensive left A gap and while penetrating slams the LG hard enough that Rocky has a clean path into the hole to stand up the running back until all his friends arrive to take him down.

Washington Redskins at 5:11

1-10-WAS 31 (5:11) T.Hightower left end to WAS 30 for -1 yards (J.Pierre-Paul).

Trent is beaten to the inside and Montgomery is pushed back, so when Hightower is forced to cut inside because Armstrong and Cooley give up the corner he has nowhere to go.

2-11-WAS 30 (4:29) R.Grossman pass short right to J.Gaffney ran ob at WAS 42 for 12 yards. New York Giants challenged the runner was in bounds ruling, and the play was REVERSED. R.Grossman pass incomplete to J.Gaffney. Player did not have two feet in bounds.

3-11-WAS 30 (3:57) R.Grossman pass short middle to F.Davis to NYG 42 for 28 yards (K.Phillips; T.Sash).

Just a perfect example of what you want from your tight end – he finds the hole in the zone down the seam and absorbs to big hits while hanging onto the ball.

1-10-NYG 42  (3:17) R.Grossman pass short middle to S.Moss to NYG 29 for 13 yards (A.Ross; K.Phillips).

A very accurate and well-timed throw into the hands of Moss, who was tightly covered.

1-10-NYG 29 (2:40) T.Hightower right end to NYG 27 for 2 yards (R.Bernard; J.Kennedy).

Again Trent is pushed into the backfield by Jason Pierre-Paul, which ruins the play.

2-8-NYG 27  (2:01) R.Grossman sacked at NYG 34 for -7 yards (J.Pierre-Paul).

Trent never sets his base so when Pierre-Paul hits is shoulder pads he is completely overpowered. Credit to Grossman here – he was blindsided in the middle of his throwing motion but managed to protect the football.

3-15-NYG 34  (1:23) (Shotgun) R.Grossman sacked at 50 for -16 yards (D.Tollefson).

I won’t blame this on any of the individual blockers. The Giants rush 7 guys, but Davis, the only tight end, releases straight into a route and Hightower is the only back, so the Giants just gamble with leaving Gaffney essentially uncovered and it works for them.

4-31-50 (:49) S.Rocca punts 40 yards to NYG 10, Center-N.Sundberg, downed by WAS-P.Riley.

Beautiful – lands on the 6, and bounces away from the end zone.

New York Giants at 0:37

1-10-NYG 10 (:37) E.Manning sacked at NYG 3 for -7 yards (C.Neild, L.Fletcher). FUMBLES (C.Neild), and recovers at NYG 2. E.Manning to NYG 2 for no gain (C.Neild; L.Fletcher).

Nield gets under the center’s right shoulder, while Kerrigan beats the RT to the right side to ensure there is no escape.
