Redskins-Cardinals 2nd quarter game review

Click here for the first quarter. As always play by play is taken from the NFL Game Book.

Let's dive in:

Second Quarter

Washington Redskins continued. 2-5-WAS 47 (15:00) PENALTY on ARZ-P.Lenon, Neutral Zone Infraction, 5 yards, enforced at WAS 47 - No Play.

1-10-ARZ 48 (15:00) R.Grossman pass short middle to S.Moss to ARZ 41 for 7 yards (P.Peterson).

The safety lined up over Santana in the slot bites hard on the play action, so after the bootleg Rex has him easily in the flat.

2-3-ARZ 41 (14:20) T.Hightower left end to ARZ 37 for 4 yards (P.Lenon).

Lichtensteiger locks onto an ILB at the second level and drives him back, opening up first down yardage for Hightower.

1-10-ARZ 37 (13:41) T.Hightower left end to ARZ 20 for 17 yards (K.Rhodes).

Trent Williams does a good job of sealing the OLB to the inside. Cooley and Montgomery each miss second level blocks meaning a ILB and a safety both have angles on the play, but Gaffney does a good job keeping the playside CB to the outside so Hightower is not forced back into the pursuit.

1-10-ARZ 20 (13:00) R.Helu right tackle to ARZ 10 for 10 yards (R.Johnson).

Cooley kicks out the LDE, and the playside ILB takes himself out of Helu’s running lane by blitzing and sticking to Jammal Brown at the line. Gaffney gets another effective-though-not-dramatic block on a safety, while Helu puts on a move that leaves the CB – the only unblocked man in his path – in the dirt.

1-10-ARZ 10 (12:19) R.Helu left guard to ARZ 3 for 7 yards (R.Marshall).

Lichtensteiger pulls to the right and drills a ILB, and the other one is taken out by a nice second level block from Brown. If Santana had sustained his downfield block better Helu would have at least had a chance to fight for a touchdown.

2-3-ARZ 3 (11:42) T.Hightower right end to ARZ 3 for no gain (C.Haggans).

Young leads through the hole, but it collapses before Hightower can run through it as both Cooley and Chester are knocked on their backs.

3-3-ARZ 3 (11:42) (Shotgun) PENALTY on WAS-T.Williams, False Start, 5 yards, enforced at ARZ 3 - No Play.

3-8-ARZ 8 (10:38) (Shotgun) R.Grossman pass incomplete short right to A.Armstrong.

The only receiver who gets open is Gaffney over the middle at about the 3 yard line. Rex starts to throw but the DT gets his hands up, so Rex has to pull it down and eventually throw it away.

4-8-ARZ 8 (10:29) G.Gano 26 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-N.Sundberg, Holder-S.Rocca.
ARZ 7 WAS 3, 14 plays, 77 yards, 2 penalties, 8:29 drive, 4:35 elapsed

G.Gano kicks 74 yards from WAS 35 to ARZ -9. A.Jefferson, Touchback.

Arizona Cardinals at 10:25

1-10-ARZ 20 (10:25) K.Kolb pass short middle to L.Fitzgerald to ARZ 25 for 5 yards (D.Hall).

Doughty was lined up in the box and Atogwe never comes into the camera view, so it is safe to surmise that if Hall hadn’t made a great open field tackle here Fitzgerald would have gained serious yards.

2-5-ARZ 25 (9:46) (Shotgun) K.Kolb pass incomplete short middle to A.Roberts.

3-5-ARZ 25 (9:41) (Shotgun) K.Kolb pass short middle to E.Doucet to ARZ 31 for 6 yards (R.Doughty; D.Hall).

Orakpo and Barnes blitz, and it is immediately exploited by a quick slant from the slot receiver.

1-10-ARZ 31 (9:03) K.Kolb pass short right to T.Heap to ARZ 39 for 8 yards (J.Wilson, R.McIntosh) [B.Orakpo].

A little outside moves fools the LT and then Orakpo jumps inside him, but the blindside hit comes just a split second after Kolb gets the ball out.

2-2-ARZ 39 (8:17) K.Kolb pass short left to J.King to WAS 46 for 15 yards (R.McIntosh; J.Wilson).

1-10-WAS 46 (7:41) C.Wells left tackle to WAS 43 for 3 yards (O.Atogwe).

It’s the four man nickel front, and Bowen and Orakpo stand up the left side of the Cardinals line while Atogwe slips past a pulling guard to make the tackle.

2-7-WAS 43 (7:06) K.Kolb sacked at ARZ 49 for -8 yards (B.Orakpo). FUMBLES (B.Orakpo), recovered by ARZ-L.Sendlein at ARZ 49. L.Sendlein to ARZ 49 for no gain (B.Cofield).

The Cardinals leave their TE one on one against Orakpo (partly because Rocky blitzes and occupies the LT), which is just a bad idea. Orakpo gets into the TE’s pads, knocks him off balance, then once the guy plants his feet gets around him and blindsides Kolb (as captured in this great photo from Homer McFanboy). Carriker very nearly comes down with the ball but it is knocked away due to an alert play by the center.

3-15-ARZ 49 (6:13) (Shotgun) K.Kolb pass incomplete short left to A.Roberts (B.Orakpo).

Orakpo comes clean on the screen pass and tips the throw.

4-15-ARZ 49 (6:09) D.Zastudil punts 51 yards to end zone, Center-M.Leach, Touchback.

Washington Redskins at 6:01

1-10-WAS 20 (6:01) T.Hightower left tackle to WAS 24 for 4 yards (P.Lenon).

Montgomery takes out one ILB with a nice second level block and there are yards to be had as both Santana and Donte Stallworth have strong downfield blocks on DBs, but Cooley misses his cut block on the other ILB. Cooley is visibly frustrated with himself after the play.

2-6-WAS 24 (5:23) T.Hightower right end to WAS 44 for 20 yards (R.Walker).

Nicely blocked. Jammal Brown kicks out the OLB,  Chester and Lichtensteiger each get strong second level blocks on the ILBs, and Santana drives a DB right out of the play as a solid downfield block from Donte Stallworth opens up even bigger yards.

1-10-WAS 44 (4:45) T.Hightower right end to WAS 47 for 3 yards (C.Haggans).

Chester is pushed back, meaning Hightower has to cut from deeper in the backfield than he’d like.

2-7-WAS 47 (4:09) R.Grossman pass short middle to R.Helu pushed ob at ARZ 20 for 33 yards (P.Peterson).

Screen pass. Helu (rather unnecessarily) hurdles Lichtensteiger, who is on the ground after cutting an ILB. Then Montgomery, despite never hitting anyone, has a big impact on the play by racing downfield and forcing the CB to continually fall back and abandon his angle on the play.

1-10-ARZ 20 (3:35) R.Helu right guard to ARZ 9 for 11 yards (S.Bradley, A.Jefferson). ARZ-P.Lenon was injured during the play.

In a continuing trend the Redskins, supposedly a pure zone blocking team, resort to good old fashioned man on man power blocking. Montgomery and Brown drive the NT and LDE off the line, while Young leads through the hole and puts a hat on an ILB. Helu puts on a cut, gives a burst of speed, and runs through the tackles of two defenders for the first down.

1-9-ARZ 9            (3:14) R.Grossman pass incomplete short middle to J.Gaffney (A.Jefferson).
PENALTY on ARZ-A.Jefferson, Defensive Pass Interference, 8 yards, enforced at ARZ 9 - No Play.

A safety blitz leave the Cardinals vulnerable to the post, but the CB uses a tug on Gaffney’s jersey (called) to get the inside positioning and nearly pick it off.

1-1-ARZ 1 (3:10) R.Grossman pass short left to F.Davis for 1 yard, TOUCHDOWN [C.Campbell]. Penalty on ARZ-C.Campbell, Defensive Offside, declined.

Ah, the joys of goal line offense, when you have the defense by the balls. The LBs and DBs fall for the play fake completely, and no one pays any attention to Fred Davis as he releases into his route wide open.

G.Gano extra point is GOOD, Center-N.Sundberg, Holder-S.Rocca.

ARZ 7 WAS 10, 6 plays, 80 yards, 1 penalty, 2:57 drive, 11:56 elapsed

G.Gano kicks 70 yards from WAS 35 to ARZ -5. A.Jefferson to ARZ 14 for 19 yards (M.Sellers).
PENALTY on WAS-R.Jackson, Offside on Free Kick, 5 yards, enforced at WAS 35 - No Play.

G.Gano kicks 71 yards from WAS 30 to ARZ -1. A.Jefferson to ARZ 29 for 30 yards (D.Gomes; B.Westbrook).

Arizona Cardinals at 3:04, (1st play from scrimmage 2:52)

1-10-ARZ 29 (2:52) C.Wells left tackle to ARZ 30 for 1 yard (R.Kerrigan).

Orakpo and and Bowen stand up the TE and LT, shutting the hole and allowing the RB to be taken down by Kerrigan’s backside pursuit.

2-9-ARZ 30  (2:52) (Shotgun) PENALTY on ARZ-L.Brown, False Start, 5 yards, enforced at ARZ 30 - No Play. Two-Minute Warning

2-14-ARZ 25 (2:00) (Shotgun) K.Kolb pass incomplete short right to C.Stuckey.

3-14-ARZ 25 (1:55) (Shotgun) K.Kolb pass incomplete short middle to C.Wells.

This drop cost the Cardinals big yards, as the Wells had three big blockers ahead of him looking at a good 15 yards of open field.

4-14-ARZ 25 (1:51) D.Zastudil punts 45 yards to WAS 30, Center-M.Leach. B.Banks to ARZ 35 for 35 yards (J.King).
PENALTY on ARZ-J.King, Face Mask (15 Yards), 15 yards, enforced at ARZ 35.

Outstanding blocks from Niles Paul and Lorenzo Alexander give Banks the corner. Jeff King wasn’t taking down Banks without the facemask – committing that penalty may have saved a touchdown.

Washington Redskins at 1:36

1-10-ARZ 20 (1:36) R.Grossman pass incomplete short left to J.Gaffney.

I honestly can’t tell whether Rex was throwing to Gaffney or Davis here, but whoever the intended receiver was ran the wrong route.

2-10-ARZ 20 (1:33) (Shotgun) R.Grossman pass short middle to J.Gaffney to ARZ 12 for 8 yards (R.Walker) [C.Campbell].
Timeout #1 by WAS at 00:46.

3-2-ARZ 12 (:46) R.Grossman pass incomplete short middle to J.Gaffney (A.Jefferson).

4-2-ARZ 12 (:42) G.Gano 30 yard field goal is BLOCKED (C.Campbell), Center-N.Sundberg, Holder-S.Rocca, RECOVERED by ARZ-A.Jefferson at ARZ 23. A.Jefferson to ARZ 23 for no gain (C.Chester).

Cardinals overload the Redskins’ left and no adjustment is made, so Perry Riley is forced to try and block two guys. It doesn't go so great.

Arizona Cardinals at 0:34

1-10-ARZ 23 (:34) (Shotgun) K.Kolb pass incomplete short middle to C.Wells (R.McIntosh). Timeout #1 by ARZ at 00:29.

Rocky is reading Wells and is waiting to break up the screen.

2-10-ARZ 23 (:29) (Shotgun) K.Kolb sacked at ARZ 19 for -4 yards (R.Kerrigan). Timeout #2 by WAS at 00:22.

Kerrigan gets into the RT’s pads and drives him back, then is able to shed and make the sack when Kolb pulls the ball down. I really like this guy.

3-14-ARZ 19  (:22) (Shotgun) K.Kolb pass short right to A.Roberts to ARZ 25 for 6 yards (J.Wilson).
Timeout #3 by WAS at 00:15.

4-8-ARZ 25  (:15) D.Zastudil punts 53 yards to WAS 22, Center-M.Leach. B.Banks to WAS 29 for 7 yards (H.Abdullah).
