Redskins @ Oakland, 4th quarter review

4th Quarter

Washington Redskins continued.

2-9-OAK 45 (15:00) J.Campbell pass incomplete short left to S.Moss. PENALTY on OAK-S.Routt, Defensive Pass Interference, 15 yards, enforced at OAK 45 - No Play.
Penalty on OAK-T.Howard, Defensive Holding, declined.

1-10-OAK 30 (14:55) J.Campbell pass incomplete deep right to S.Moss (C.Johnson).

2-10-OAK 30 (14:48) M.Mason right tackle to OAK 23 for 7 yards (T.Kelly).

Heyer gives up the corner but Yoder, leading, sees this and cuts the play back inside with Mason following. Mason runs off Williams left shoulder and Yoder takes out a LB who tries to get to the hole. Williams gets a good initial push on the DT but is unable to sustain the block and the DT wraps up Mason. Thanks to some powerful running on Mason's part, he is able to pick up several more yards before going down.

3-3-OAK 23 (14:08) J.Campbell pass short middle to M.Kelly to OAK 13 for 10 yards (T.Branch).

Marcus Mason is known for his struggles in pass protection, but here he does a good job picking up the LDE who comes in unblocked, presumably due to an assignment mix-up by the linemen.

1-10-OAK 13 (13:27) Q.Ganther up the middle to OAK 10 for 3 yards (D.Bryant).

There is a little bit of a hole available, but when Yoder meets a LB with his lead block he gets crumpled to the ground and clogs it with his own body.

2-7-OAK 10 (12:47) (Shotgun) J.Campbell pass short right to S.Moss to OAK 2 for 8 yards (K.Morrison).

The screen pass is poorly blocked and Santana is left to make something out of nothing with his athletic ability. Heyer and Williams block really poorly and let a defender slip past them, and Rabach is just too slow getting over and never hits any one. The only blocker who did his job on the play is Fred Davis.

1-2-OAK 2 (12:04) Q.Ganther right guard to OAK 1 for 1 yard (T.Scott).

Raiders stack up on the LOS, and the entire right side of the Redskins line is pushed into the backfield, forcing Ganther to cut back to the left and into the arms of a safety coming unblocked from the back side.

2-1-OAK 1 (11:25) Q.Ganther right guard for 1 yard, TOUCHDOWN.

Yoder leads through the hole and sticks a good block on a OLB at the goal line to keep the hole open. Rabach is tasked with taking out the MLB but just flails at him with his arm, but fortunately Ganther runs hard enough to just power through the guy.

G.Gano extra point is GOOD, Center-E.Albright, Holder-H.Smith.

WAS 24 OAK 13, 13 plays, 80 yards, 1 penalty, 6:01 drive, 3:38 elapsed

G.Gano kicks 70 yards from WAS 30 to end zone, Touchback.

Six yards deep into the end zone. I think Gano's a keeper.

Oakland Raiders at 11:22

1-10-OAK 20 (11:22) J.Russell pass deep middle intended for C.Schilens INTERCEPTED by L.Landry at OAK 40. L.Landry to OAK 41 for -1 yards (C.Schilens).

Oakland challenged the pass completion ruling, and the play was Upheld. (Timeout #2 at 11:14.)

The ball is thrown behind the receiver, so although it is a great diving catch by Landry the QB never should have given him that chance.

Washington Redskins at 11:14

1-10-OAK 41 (11:14) J.Campbell pass deep left to S.Moss to OAK 11 for 30 yards (H.Eugene).

The CB plays inside leverage on Santana, and a safety is coming over the top, so the deep route is out. Campbell and Moss both see this. Santana turns early and Campbell throws the ball deliberately short and lets Santana adjust on the fly.

1-10-OAK 11 (10:42) J.Campbell pass short left to Q.Ganther to OAK 7 for 4 yards (T.Howard).

Ganther could have picked up a few more yards on this swing pass, but Santana didn't bother to block the LB who had been covering him.

2-6-OAK 7 (10:08) J.Campbell pass short right to S.Moss pushed ob at OAK 1 for 6 yards (C.Johnson).

1-1-OAK 1 (9:47) Q.Ganther up the middle for 1 yard, TOUCHDOWN.

Dockery tries to pull to the right but get tangled up on Rabach, but Ganther is once again able to power through the tiniest sliver of a hole opened up by Mike Williams. Finally, FINALLY, the Redskins gain an advantage over an opponent and then succesfully move in for the kill.

G.Gano extra point is GOOD, Center-E.Albright, Holder-H.Smith.

WAS 31 OAK 13, 4 plays, 41 yards, 1:32 drive, 5:18 elapsed

G.Gano kicks 70 yards from WAS 30 to end zone, Touchback.

Oakland Raiders at 9:42

1-10-OAK 20 (9:42) J.Russell sacked at OAK 10 for -10 yards (B.Orakpo). FUMBLES (B.Orakpo), recovered by OAK-M.Henderson at OAK 3.

Golston and Alexander are allowed to penetrate up the middle to set up a screen, but the RB trips while attempting to escape from the backfield. Russell probably wouldn't have gotten the ball out in time anyway, as Orakpo lines up wide at RDE and the LT is never able to square him up. Orakpo blindsides him easily, and Andre Carter misses a free touchdown in a manner that will haunt him for the rest of his life.

2-27-OAK 3 (8:54) D.McFadden left guard to OAK 6 for 3 yards (L.Fletcher).

Lorenzo Alexander, at DT, drives the LG into the backfield and forces the RB to cut inside, whereupon Alexander spins off his block and get an arm around the RB. After Alexander stops him Fletcher comes in to finish him off.

3-24-OAK 6 (8:15) (Shotgun) J.Russell pass short left to D.McFadden to OAK 16 for 10 yards (R.McIntosh).
Penalty on OAK-C.Morris, Offensive Holding, declined.

Alexander beats the LG badly with a spin move, and guard has no choice but to tackle him from behind to prevent a sack. I guess the act of holding was initiated outside the end zone and that's why this wasn't called a safety, but Alexander hit the ground in the end zone while still being held, so this one is open to interpretation.

4-14-OAK 16 (7:54) S.Lechler punts 38 yards to WAS 46, Center-J.Condo. A.Randle El MUFFS catch, touched at 50, RECOVERED by OAK.

Admit it - between Carter not scoring the easy touchdown on the fumble and Randle El giving the ball right back to Oakland, it at least crossed your mind that these were the first two items in a bizaare chaing of events that would somehow lead to the Redskins losing this game in terrible fashion.

Oakland Raiders at 7:45

1-10-50 (7:45) (Shotgun) J.Russell sacked at OAK 41 for -9 yards (L.Alexander).

That poor LG just had no idea what to do with Alexander today. Alexander takes on stutter step to the outside, then puts on a swim move to the inside and bursts right up the middle for the sack.

Timeout #3 by OAK at 07:23.

2-19-OAK 41 (7:23) (Shotgun) J.Russell pass short right to C.Schilens to OAK 46 for 5 yards (L.Fletcher).

3-14-OAK 46 (6:57) (No Huddle, Shotgun) J.Russell pass incomplete short left to L.Murphy (R.Jackson).

Alexander draws a double team from DT for the second straight play, so he tries another spin move but it runs him right into the C. As soon as he sees that he isn't getting to the QB he drops back and waits to bat down the pass. I watched this in slow motion several times and am pretty sure it was Alexander who knocked it down, not Rob Jackson (who was the other DT) as the scorer recorded. Maybe someone out there who has the game recorded in hi def can verify this.

4-14-OAK 46 (6:53) (Shotgun) J.Russell sacked at OAK 44 for -2 yards (A.Carter).

Initial pass rush is contained, but Russell slips while trying to escape the pocket and Carter sheds off his block to take him down.

Washington Redskins at 6:48

1-10-OAK 44 (6:48) D.Thomas left end to OAK 48 for -4 yards (N.Asomugha).

Fred Davis lines up on the right side and comes across the back of the formation to lead Thomas on the end around to the left, but Asomugha is in the backfield quickly because he was running a coner blitz from the get-go and he slips by Davis.

2-14-OAK 48 (6:12) M.Mason right tackle pushed ob at OAK 36 for 12 yards (H.Eugene).

Heyer succesfully seals the LDE to the inside. A CB comes untouched off the corner. Yoder sees him, but decides to let Mason beat him with his quickness (which he does) and blocks a LB to open up the big gain. A poor downfield block by Santana prevents this from being a first down.

3-2-OAK 36 (5:44) M.Mason right tackle to OAK 29 for 7 yards (M.Shaughnessy).

Raiders blitz a safety - Yoder picks him up in the backfield but this forces the play back inside. Fortunately Rabach and Williams succesfully seal most of the defense to the offensive left and Mason has a hole to shoot through.

1-10-OAK 29 (5:01) M.Mason right tackle to OAK 29 for no gain (T.Howard).

2-10-OAK 29 (4:19) M.Mason right end to OAK 28 for 1 yard (G.Warren, C.Johnson).

Heyer gives up the corner and the play is forced back inside. The Raiders continue to sell out completely against the run and the Redskins continue to throw Mason right into the teeth of eight man boxes and run blitzes.

3-9-OAK 28 (3:37) M.Mason left tackle to OAK 23 for 5 yards (T.Scott; K.Morrison).

Good play by Levi taking a LB outside to open up the hole. Dockery gives up penetration but Mason is quick enough to avoid it.

4-4-OAK 23 (3:37) G.Gano 41 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-E.Albright, Holder-H.Smith.

WAS 34 OAK 13, 7 plays, 21 yards, 4:01 drive, 12:13 elapsed

G.Gano kicks 69 yards from WAS 30 to OAK 1. G.Russell to OAK 25 for 24 yards (H.Blades; R.Doughty).

Oakland Raiders at 2:47, (1st play from scrimmage 2:40)

1-10-OAK 25 (2:40) (Shotgun) J.Russell pass short right to Z.Miller to OAK 35 for 10 yards (L.Landry, R.McIntosh).

Russell steps up into the pocket and takes a big hit from Orakpo as he throws.

1-10-OAK 35 (2:16) (No Huddle, Shotgun) J.Russell pass short right to Z.Miller to OAK 35 for no gain (R.McIntosh).

Miller catches the pass in the flat with plenty of room in front of him, but great closing speed by Rocky (as well as a missed block by a WR) keeps it at no gain.

Two-Minute Warning

2-10-OAK 35 (2:00) (Shotgun) J.Russell pass short left to Z.Miller to OAK 40 for 5 yards (L.Fletcher).
Due to Miller injury and no timeouts resulted in the 10 second run-off. 1:40 to 1:30

3-5-OAK 40 (1:25) (Shotgun) PENALTY on OAK-C.Green, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at OAK 40 - No Play.

3-15-OAK 30 (1:19) (Shotgun) J.Russell pass short right to B.Myers to OAK 36 for 6 yards (L.Fletcher).

4-9-OAK 36 (:55) (No Huddle, Shotgun) J.Russell pass incomplete deep right to B.Myers.

Orakpo beats the LT again and throws Russell to the ground one last time on the Raiders final offensive play.

Washington Redskins at 0:50

1-10-OAK 36 (:50) J.Campbell kneels to OAK 37 for -1 yards.

Victory formation. We haven't seen enough of this play this year.

2-11-OAK 37 (:17) J.Campbell kneels to OAK 37 for no gain.
