I'm sick of the lockout and going to talk Redskins even though I don't have anything new to say

Behold, my desperate attempt to find something to talk about during the lockout:

Most underrated Redskin - Adam Carricker

He didn't get noticed until he finally got some support when Vonnie Holliday and Anthony Bryant brought some production to the other two line positions over the last two games. But he was always the one man holding his ground while Ma'ake Kemoeatu and Kedric Golston were busy getting carried downfield. If the rest of the line is improved in the offseason, I think Carricker's consistently solid work will finally start getting some attention.

Most overrated Redskin - Ryan Torain

Note that "overrated" does not mean "bad." Just not as good as he is made out to be. He badly needs to improve his blitz pickup, but he also has pretty poor field vision. Fortunately he has the abiltiy to run his way out of trouble, but a more polished runner wouldn't get himself into much of that trouble in the first place. He has a high ceiling, but he's not there yet.

Struggling Redskins with best chance for a positive contribution in 2011 - Kory Lichtensteiger

He will never be an overpowering blocker, but he doesn't need to be. He improved as the year went on, and to my eye most of the mental breakdowns along the line were the fault of others. He's not cut out for guard, but the Redskins are badly in need for a new, younger center and I am eager to see if Lichtensteiger can do the job (he played two games at center in the preseason and looked good). He also has an awesome lineman-y name which by itself should earn him a starting job.

Most improved Redskin - LaRon Landry

He was just so lost in 2009... not just in coverage, but he was often out of position even when in run support. But under Jim Haslett, who in stark contrast to his handling of the front seven seemed adept at getting the most out of his secondary talent, Landry finally found the balance between aggression and discipline and was fundamental in the running game.

Most underhyped Redskins weakness - Punting

I don't think I need to tell you that with holes at quarterback, wide receiver, and three interior line spots the offense is unlikely to take a great leap forward in one offseason. The best case scenario is mediocrity. That means the 3.7 second line drives we were subjected to last year simply have to stop. The struggling defense was subjected to too many short fields last year. And if, as I hope, the defense can be significanlty improved by September they will still need to be given a chance - and the best way is for the offense's stalled drives to at least flip the field position. I know full well that field position football isn't going to win you any championships in this day and age, but it is the Redskins fastest path to simply being competitive.
Most underutilized Redskin in 2010 - Chris Wilson

I'm not sure what Wilson did to piss Jim Haslett off, but after solid DE play in Greg Blache's defense (filling the exact same role as Orakpo) he got relegated to taking on guards from a standing position in the one and two lineman formations. I think this guy can play, and I hope he and Rob Jackson get a chance to compete to take the LOLB job from Lorenzo Alexander.

  1. I like Lichtensteiger as that selection. I think he'll be the Skins starting Center before the 2011 season ends (if it ever begins). Also keep an eye on two other guys: Perry Riley and Jeremy Jarmon. Riley will be our other starting ILB next to Fletcher (my opinion) and Jarmon will be competing to be a starting 3-4 DE opposite of Carriker.
