Redskins vs. Eagles 2nd quarter game review

1st quarter review

SECOND QUARTER

1-10-WAS 48 (15:00) (Shotgun) M.Vick pass deep right to J.Maclin for 48 yards, TOUCHDOWN. Washington challenged the runner broke the plane ruling, and the play was Upheld. (Timeout #1 at 14:51.)

Fletcher crowds the offensive left A gap and attacks hard successfully drawing a double team from the center and LG, but when Rocky crosses behind him the RB picks him up well. Maake is able to drive through the RG but Vick already sees that he has his receiver and he has time to step into his throw. Hall’s coverage wasn’t bad, although he may slightly mistime his route. But Vick placed the ball just absolutely perfectly.

D.Akers extra point is GOOD, Center-J.Dorenbos, Holder-S.Rocca.

PHI 35 WAS 0, 3 plays, 58 yards, 0:57 drive, 0:09 elapsed

D.Akers kicks 66 yards from PHI 30 to WAS 4. B.Banks to WAS 26 for 22 yards (C.Anderson).

Washington Redskins at 14:51, (1st play from scrimmage 14:46)

1-10-WAS 26 (14:46) D.McNabb pass deep left to F.Davis pushed ob at PHI 3 for 71 yards (K.Coleman; E.Sims).

Sellers, from the RTE position as part of twins with Fred Davis, cuts the LDE and doesn’t take him down but trips him up enough that McNabb has plenty of time to get into his bootleg and set for his throw (Sellers is hurt while going down though). Davis looks like he’s blocking LBs as part of the run action (in fact he puts one on the ground) and no one think to account for him as a receiver so he is wide open when he releases into a wheel route. He has to slow up slightly to make the catch, and in the process loses his balance a bit. He never really regains his footing; otherwise he easily would have outrun the defenders for a touchdown.

1-3-PHI 3 (14:22) D.McNabb pass short right to D.Young for 3 yards, TOUCHDOWN.

The line sells the run action to the left very hard and gets the hole defense moving that way, but Darrel Young, after starting to lead block, cut hard in the other direction – so hard that the DB who would be responsible for him in the flat actually goes to the ground to give up the easy touchdown.

G.Gano extra point is GOOD, Center-N.Sundberg, Holder-H.Smith.

PHI 35 WAS 7, 2 plays, 74 yards, 0:36 drive, 0:45 elapsed

G.Gano kicks 67 yards from WAS 30 to PHI 3. J.Calvin to PHI 19 for 16 yards (D.Young; R.Williams).

Philadelphia Eagles at 14:15, (1st play from scrimmage 14:10)

1-10-PHI 19 (14:10) (Shotgun) M.Vick pass short left to B.Celek to PHI 26 for 7 yards (L.Fletcher).

A four man front, finally: Carriker, Golston, Daniels, and Orakpo from left to right. Daniels splits the B gap but he is held a bit and Vick gets the ball out quickly anyway.

2-3-PHI 26 (13:31) (Shotgun) L.McCoy right guard to PHI 29 for 3 yards (L.Fletcher).

Four man front again. Haynesworth is at RDT but he stunts to the outside, just taking himself out of the running lane. Golston and Orakpo (RDE) are stood up by the RG and C.

1-10-PHI 29 (12:49) L.McCoy right tackle to PHI 32 for 3 yards (L.Fletcher; L.Alexander).

Lorenzo Alexander lets the RTE control him to the inside to open up the corner to the counter run, but Fletcher reads it well.

2-7-PHI 32 (12:05) M.Vick pass incomplete short left to B.Celek (P.Buchanon) [R.McIntosh].

Alexander and Haynesworth are standing over each A gap – Alexander drops into coverage while Haynesworth rushes and pushes back a double team. The RT is occupied by Orakpo rushing from LDE and no one picks up Rocky who comes untouched off the edge and blindsides Vick.

3-7-PHI 32 (12:00) (Shotgun) M.Vick pass short middle to J.Maclin to PHI 33 for 1 yard (L.Alexander, D.Hall). WAS-D.Hall was injured during the play.

4-6-PHI 33 (11:12) S.Rocca punts 48 yards to WAS 19, Center-J.Dorenbos, out of bounds.

Washington Redskins at 11:03

1-10-WAS 19 (11:03) D.McNabb pass deep left to A.Armstrong pushed ob at PHI 5 for 76 yards (K.Coleman).

Eagles put five guys on the line with their hands down, but two drop into coverage while the MLB tries to blitz the A gap. But Lichtensteiger is there waiting for him as the Redskins line seems to be expecting this ploy. Just a simple go route from Armstrong but he beats his guy with pure speed and McNabb hits him perfectly.

1-5-PHI 5 (10:36) K.Williams right guard to PHI 1 for 4 yards (Q.Mikell, S.Bradley).

Hicks seals the DT inside, and a pulling Lichtensteiger forms to other wall of the running lane by trapping the LDE outside. Then a solid lead block by Sellers and a second level block by Jammal Brown get Keiland almost to the goal line.

2-1-PHI 1 (10:36) PENALTY on WAS-A.Hicks, False Start, 5 yards, enforced at PHI 1 - No Play.

2-6-PHI 6 (9:45) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short middle to K.Williams for 6 yards, TOUCHDOWN.

The Eagles rush six, and the rest of the defense is drawn away by end zone routes, so Keiland leaks out for an easy dumpoff, then he lowers his shoulder and absolutely flattens a safety for the score.

G.Gano extra point is GOOD, Center-N.Sundberg, Holder-H.Smith.

PHI 35 WAS 14, 3 plays, 81 yards, 1:24 drive, 5:21 elapsed

G.Gano kicks 69 yards from WAS 30 to PHI 1. J.Calvin to PHI 18 for 17 yards (L.Alexander).

Philadelphia Eagles at 9:39, (1st play from scrimmage 9:33)

1-10-PHI 18 (9:33) (Shotgun) L.McCoy left end to PHI 27 for 9 yards (L.Fletcher, C.Rogers).

Orakpo is at ROLB and lets himself get blocked to the inside by the LTE, and Rocky bites too hard on the counter action. This could have been a bigger play, but the WR on the play side (Maclin I think) doesn’t make even the slightest effort to block anyone.

2-1-PHI 27 (8:50) M.Vick scrambles right end to PHI 40 for 13 yards (M.Kemoeatu, L.Alexander).

No one did anything noticeably wrong here. Just Vick being Vick.

1-10-PHI 40 (8:04) (Shotgun) L.McCoy left guard to PHI 41 for 1 yard (K.Golston, B.Orakpo).

Daniels gets blown way off the line by a double team, but Rocky shoots the gap and stuffs the play.

2-9-PHI 41 (7:23) (Shotgun) M.Vick sacked at PHI 40 for -1 yards (sack split by A.Carter and B.Orakpo).

Another one of Haslett’s cutsie formations. It kind of works but it still irritates me. Basically all of the Eagles linemen are uncovered. Haynesworth and Orakpo stack outside the LT and Carter and Rocky are on the opposite side. Alexander is the only LB even close to the middle of the field, but he’s responsible for the slot receiver. Why Vick didn’t check to a draw up the middle for a guaranteed first down (or more, the way this game was going) will forever remain a mystery. Anyway, Haynesworth rather viciously collapses the left side of the Eagles line, so Vick is forced to step up and he runs straight into the arms of Carter, who did a nice job of pushing his man back then shedding the block.

3-10-PHI 40 (6:48) (Shotgun) M.Vick pass incomplete short left to O.Schmitt (A.Carter).

Vick takes a deep drop on top of his shotgun depth but its clear none of his deep routes get open. Haynesworth runs through both the LT and LG to flush him out of the pocket. Andre Carter, once his is stymied on his inside pass rush, does a nice job of converting himself into a spy on Vick and has the perfect angle to chase him down, forcing Vick to try a desperate throw to the FB rather than running.

4-10-PHI 40 (6:38) S.Rocca punts 53 yards to WAS 7, Center-J.Dorenbos. B.Banks to WAS 13 for 6 yards (C.Anderson).

Washington Redskins at 6:26

1-10-WAS 13 (6:26) D.McNabb pass incomplete deep right to A.Armstrong (Q.Mikell). PENALTY on WAS-C.Rabach, Offensive Holding, 6 yards, enforced at WAS 13 - No Play.

Cooley chips the LDE so effectively that Trent Williams has a long time to stand there rather awkwardly before having a chance to block someone, and each of the DTs gets double teamed. This is all great, except it leaves Keiland and Davis responsible for the RDE. Davis just whiffs entirely, then Keiland sets up a solid block but is overpowered and just bounces off of him.

1-16-WAS 7 (6:15) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short left to K.Williams pushed ob at WAS 16 for 9 yards (D.Patterson).

2-7-WAS 16 (5:49) (Shotgun) D.McNabb FUMBLES (Aborted) at WAS 11, and recovers at WAS 11. D.McNabb to WAS 11 for no gain (B.Bunkley).

3-12-WAS 11 (5:15) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass deep middle intended for J.Galloway INTERCEPTED by D.Patterson at WAS 28. D.Patterson to WAS 28 for no gain (J.Galloway).

Galloway rounds off his in route, allowing the CB to easily jump it for the pick.

Philadelphia Eagles at 5:08

1-10-WAS 28 (5:08) (Shotgun) M.Vick pass short middle to B.Celek to WAS 27 for 1 yard (L.Fletcher).

2-9-WAS 27 (4:24) (Shotgun) M.Vick pass incomplete short middle to L.McCoy.

The Redskins line up in their exceptionally wide split again – Carter and Orakpo outside RT, Haynesworth and Rocky outside LT, with the other LBs clearly in pass coverage. I can only imagine that Vick does not have the authority to audible, as this formation is screaming for a draw up the middle, either by McCoy or by Vick himself. Regardless, the screen pass is dropped.

3-9-WAS 27 (4:17) (Shotgun) M.Vick scrambles right end pushed ob at WAS 6 for 21 yards (L.Fletcher).

Haynesworth and Carter generate pressure from their interior line spots but Carter, who must have had two gap responsibility, abandons one of them and Vick escapes through it.

1-6-WAS 6 (3:47) (Shotgun) M.Vick pass incomplete short left to R.Cooper.

2-6-WAS 6 (3:40) (Shotgun) M.Vick right end for 6 yards, TOUCHDOWN.

This looks like a designed run – he runs as soon as he hits the top of his drop. Alexander is at LDE and gets stuck too far inside, while Orakpo is at LOLB and rushes outside. One or the other blew his contain responsibility on Vick, who runs right between them. Rocky may have had an angle on him, but he is quite blatantly held by the RB at the second level. Then DeAngelo Hall misses a tackle in such an embarrassing manner that only Michael Vick could have caused it.

D.Akers extra point is GOOD, Center-J.Dorenbos, Holder-S.Rocca.

PHI 42 WAS 14, 5 plays, 28 yards, 1:34 drive, 11:26 elapsed

D.Akers kicks 70 yards from PHI 30 to end zone, Touchback.

Washington Redskins at 3:34

1-10-WAS 20 (3:34) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass incomplete short middle to K.Williams (S.Bradley).

Trent Williams is driven back far enough by the RDE that McNabb is unable to step into his throw. He tries to fire it out to but it’s a forced throw as the MLB is right in front of him and deflects the pass.

2-10-WAS 20 (3:29) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass incomplete short left to C.Cooley.

Timeout #2 by WAS at 03:25.

3-10-WAS 20 (3:25) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short middle to K.Williams to WAS 29 for 9 yards (D.Patterson) [D.Tapp].

Lichtensteiger absorbs a solid rush from the DT, but then think he can pass him off to Rabach. However Rabach is occupied with a blitzing LB, so the DT penetrates and gets his arms around McNabb. McNabb is somehow able to get the ball out to Keiland.

4-1-WAS 29 (2:53) H.Smith punts 46 yards to PHI 25, Center-N.Sundberg. D.Jackson ran ob at PHI 37 for 12 yards (R.Doughty).

Only 3.8 seconds

Philadelphia Eagles at 2:40

1-10-PHI 37 (2:40) (Shotgun) M.Vick pass deep right to J.Avant to WAS 36 for 27 yards (D.Hall).

Lorenzo Alexander is aligned at DT (though standing) and rushes to the outside. He puts a good move on the LT and has a clear path at Vick, but understandable is so worried about keeping contain that he just sort of freezes and Vick has an easy throw.

Two-Minute Warning

1-10-WAS 36 (2:00) (Shotgun) L.McCoy up the middle to WAS 31 for 5 yards (C.Rogers).

Haynesworth explodes through the left A gap and is far too fast for the RG’s attempted trap block… and the Eagles run a draw right past him.

2-5-WAS 31 (1:22) (Shotgun) L.McCoy right end to WAS 29 for 2 yards (B.Orakpo).

Very, very nice play by Orakpo. He stays home on the edge to guard against the cutback my McCoy – which is always likely – then sheds his blocker and makes an excellent open field tackle.

Timeout #3 by WAS at 01:12.

Timeout #1 by PHI at 01:12.

3-3-WAS 29 (1:12) M.Vick pass short right to L.McCoy to WAS 30 for -1 yards (D.Hall, B.Orakpo).

Nice play in run support by Hall. He has his flaws, but he has clearly earned his way out of a reputation as a hesitant tackler.

4-4-WAS 30 (:31) D.Akers 48 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-J.Dorenbos, Holder-S.Rocca.

PHI 45 WAS 14, 5 plays, 33 yards, 2:15 drive, 14:35 elapsed

D.Akers kicks 69 yards from PHI 30 to WAS 1. B.Banks to WAS 24 for 23 yards (M.Fokou).

Not really relevant to anything right now, but I vividly remember the poor kickoff that got Akers cut after his one and only game as a Redskin.

Washington Redskins at 0:25, (1st play from scrimmage 0:19)

1-10-WAS 24 (:19) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short left to K.Williams ran ob at 50 for 26 yards.

The screen looks a little sloppy in the setup, but Lichtensteiger gets a nicely timed block (which requires a bit of awareness) on a defender who is right in front of Keiland as he receives the ball, leaving Keiland with a whole lot of green in front of him, the rest of the defense having been drawn away by deep routes. Keiland also puts a very nice move on a DB which earns him an extra 7 yards or so and also gets him to the sideline to stop the clock.

1-10-50 (:10) (Shotgun) D.McNabb sacked at WAS 37 for -13 yards (T.Laws).

A stunt by the DTs seems to confuse the Redskins OLs, as Trent Williams is left blocking no one and Cooley is one on one against the LDE. Cooley loses that matchup, at the same time as Trent gets caught in a backpedal and is beaten to his inside by the RDE.

  1. This must be hard. Everyone knows that our problems stem from the IOL. I saw that you pointed out Rabach's declining play in your early roster projections.

If you move Kory to Center, who is best placed to take over at LG?

  2. Probably Will Montgomery, though I am not enthused by the prospect.
