SECOND QUARTER
1-10-TEN 40 (15:00) D.McNabb pass incomplete short middle to K.Williams [S.Marks].
1-10-TEN 40 (15:00) D.McNabb pass incomplete short middle to K.Williams [S.Marks].
2-10-TEN 40 (14:55) K.Williams right guard to TEN 34 for 6 yards (C.Hope, M.Griffin).
The DLs are successfully pinned to the offensive right with the counter action, and Keiland cuts back inside as Cooley slows a safety who tries to close the gap. Keiland then lowers his shoulder and drives for a few extra yards.
3-4-TEN 34 (14:14) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short right to S.Moss pushed ob at TEN 16 for 18 yards (C.Finnegan). WAS D.Dockery was injured during the play. His return is Questionable.
The protection adjusts nicely as the Titans blitz both LBs out of their nickel package. The LDT attacks the right A gap drawing Lichtensteiger (at RG, for the moment) to the inside to open a lane for the MLB, but Keiland reads it well and puts a very solid block on him. Then the rest of the line adjust so that Montgomery picks up the other LB and Dockery and Trent have the other two DLs. Trent almost gets beat to the outside, but the lack of pressure up the middle lets McNabb throw freely.
Dockery goes down, so from here on out your offensive line, left to right, is: Trent, Lichtensteiger, Montgomery, Heyer (!), Brown.
1-10-TEN 16 (13:52) K.Williams left end to TEN 12 for 4 yards (W.Witherspoon, G.McRath).
Trent and Montgomery pull to the right and take out two defenders, and Keiland has room upfield due to a solid second-level block by Lichtensteiger and Roydell Williams squaring up a DB from the slot position. But Heyer, coming from RG, can’t get a handle on his LB and that guy comes across the field to stop what could have been a bigger gain.
2-6-TEN 12 (13:14) D.McNabb pass incomplete short right to S.Moss.
3-6-TEN 12 (13:11) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short middle to S.Moss to TEN 5 for 7 yards (T.Brown).
LBs blitz unaccounted for off either edge but Santana, lined up in the backfield, takes a shovel pass that exploits them perfectly. Despite where Santana was lined up, the shovel pass must have been a call at the line when Donovan recognized the blitz. I say this because the receivers were clearly running routes rather than looking to set up blocks; in fact if Cooley hadn’t made a cut to get away from his DB Santana may have scored.
1-5-TEN 5 (12:37) K.Williams up the middle to TEN 3 for 2 yards (S.Tulloch).
2-3-TEN 3 (12:08) K.Williams up the middle to TEN 2 for 1 yard (J.Haye).
3-2-TEN 2 (11:31) M.Sellers up the middle to TEN 2 for no gain (J.Haye, D.Ball).
Lichtensteiger completely whiffs on his cut block allowing a DL to hit Sellers clean in the backfield.
4-2-TEN 2 (10:54) (Field Goal formation) PENALTY on TEN-S.Marks, Encroachment, 1 yard, enforced at TEN 2 - No Play.
4-1-TEN 1 (10:42) (Field Goal formation) G.Gano 19 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-N.Sundberg, Holder-H.Smith.
WAS 10 TEN 7, 15 plays, 72 yards, 1 penalty, 7:18 drive, 4:22 elapsed
G.Gano kicks 70 yards from WAS 30 to end zone, Touchback.
Tennessee Titans at 10:38
1-10-TEN 20 (10:38) V.Young pass short middle to C.Johnson to TEN 22 for 2 yards (L.Fletcher).
2-8-TEN 22 (9:58) V.Young pass short left to B.Scaife to TEN 24 for 2 yards (R.McIntosh).
3-6-TEN 24 (9:19) (Shotgun) V.Young pass short right to N.Washington to TEN 38 for 14 yards (A.Carter).
Haynesworth, Rocky, and Fletcher are all standing over the interior lineman, hoping that they will fail to adjust when Fletcher drops into coverage and Kareem Moore blitzes off the edge. The OLs adjust easily to the pass rush and Moore’s blitz is not disguised at all so the RB picks him up well and Young has plenty of time.
1-10-TEN 38 (8:40) C.Johnson right tackle to TEN 45 for 7 yards (B.Orakpo).
Almost the entire defense was sucked to the offensive right by the counter action and sealed there; Johnson had a wall to cut back behind and this could have been a huge play if Orakpo hadn’t done a good job with his backside responsibility.
2-3-TEN 45 (8:03) V.Young pass deep right to J.Gage to WAS 32 for 23 yards (R.McIntosh, D.Hall).
The defense bites hard on the counter again, but this time it is for play action and Young is able to boot out to his right without even a hint of pressure.
1-10-WAS 32 (7:23) V.Young pass short left to B.Scaife to WAS 26 for 6 yards (L.Fletcher).
2-4-WAS 26 (6:48) (Shotgun) C.Johnson up the middle to WAS 25 for 1 yard (K.Golston, A.Carter).
Carter takes on the pulling guard and wins the collision, pinching the hole shut.
3-3-WAS 25 (6:08) (Shotgun) V.Young pass short right to N.Washington pushed ob at WAS 17 for 8 yards (P.Buchanon).
Doughty tries to blitz but the RG recognizes it and passes off Carter to the C.
1-10-WAS 17 (5:39) C.Johnson left tackle to WAS 15 for 2 yards (K.Moore). PENALTY on TEN, Illegal Formation, 5 yards, enforced at WAS 17 - No Play.
1-15-WAS 22 (5:18) V.Young pass short left to A.Hall to WAS 3 for 19 yards (L.Fletcher, K.Moore).
Pass rushers fail to read the screen and get blown up when Young drops it to the RB with two blockers in front of him facing only Rocky.
1-3-WAS 3 (4:37) C.Johnson right end to WAS 5 for -2 yards (A.Carter). PENALTY on TEN-E.Amano, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at WAS 3 - No Play.
Great play by Carter – he drives the TE off the line so hard that he runs him into the leading FB, wrecking the play entirely.
1-13-WAS 13 (4:11) C.Johnson up the middle to WAS 7 for 6 yards (M.Kemoeatu, R.Doughty). WAS-R.McIntosh was injured during the play. His return is Questionable.
Maake gets carried off the line by a double team and Daniels (RDE) is cut. Carriker at LDE has a chance to shed his blocker and fill the hole but he is held. Aaaaaand H.B. Blades is your new ILB.
2-7-WAS 7 (3:45) V.Young pass incomplete short right to C.Johnson.
One his first play, Blades is all over Johnson’s swing route and forces Young to throw it away.
3-7-WAS 7 (3:41) (Shotgun) V.Young pass incomplete short right to R.Moss [V.Holliday].
Vonnie Holliday splits a double team and gets in Young’s face, forcing him to throw it out the back of the end zone.
4-7-WAS 7 (3:36) (Field Goal formation) R.Bironas 25 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-K.Amato, Holder-B.Kern.
WAS 10 TEN 10, 13 plays, 73 yards, 7:07 drive, 11:29 elapsed
R.Bironas kicks 67 yards from TEN 30 to WAS 3. B.Banks pushed ob at WAS 37 for 34 yards (T.Shaw).
Washington Redskins at 3:31, (1st play from scrimmage 3:25)
1-10-WAS 37 (3:25) D.McNabb pass short right to F.Davis to TEN 40 for 23 yards (C.Hope) [J.Ford].
Davis fights the LDE long enough to convince him that he was purely a blocker on the play, then sheds off and takes the easy dumpoff in the flat. Just in time, too, because Trent is beaten badly around the edge by the LDE and McNabb gets taken down just after the throw. Brown sets up a nice downfield block to secure the first down.
1-10-TEN 40 (2:38) PENALTY on TEN-J.Haye, Encroachment, 5 yards, enforced at TEN 40 - No Play.
1-5-TEN 35 (2:25) K.Williams up the middle to TEN 29 for 6 yards (G.McRath).
Excellent work from Heyer here. While the rest of the line is getting blown back, Heyer and Cooley cross the field and form a wall allowing Keiland to cut back inside, the Keiland runs through a tackler for an extra thee yards and the first down.
Two-Minute Warning
1-10-TEN 29 (2:00) K.Williams right end to TEN 30 for -1 yards (S.Tulloch).
Brown is driven back by the LDE, delaying Keiland’s opportunity to turn the corner.
2-11-TEN 30 (1:21) D.McNabb pass short middle intended for J.Galloway INTERCEPTED by W.Witherspoon at TEN 19. W.Witherspoon to TEN 21 for 2 yards (S.Heyer).
The line slides its protection to the right, leaving Sellers and Keiland responsible for the RDE. Sellers cuts him and takes him down completely, while the other three DLs just end up in a hopeless scrum with the entire Redskins line. McNabb is initially fixated on a route to his right – never get a view of what he wants, but its either Cooley short or Santana deep. But while he’s staring down the mystery receiver replay shows us that Galloway gets open by about 10 yards on a crossing route. By the time McNabb finally gives up on his first read, the defense has recovered and closed on Galloway, leading to the pick.
Tennessee Titans at 1:10
1-10-TEN 21 (1:10) (Shotgun) C.Johnson up the middle to TEN 17 for -4 yards (A.Haynesworth, B.Orakpo).
Haynesworth is at nose with Orakpo standing outside the LT. The LG and C doubles team Haynesworth, which is a problem because the LT goes straight to the second level. Orakpo is unblocked, although the FB could have accounted for him but seems to think it’s a pass play and dodges him to go out into a route, so Johnson is crushed by Orakpo and Haynesworth, who had dominated that double team anyway.
2-14-TEN 17 (:47) V.Young pass short right to B.Scaife pushed ob at TEN 30 for 13 yards (K.Moore).
3-1-TEN 30 (:42) (Shotgun) V.Young pass incomplete short middle to N.Washington.
Blades tries to cross his blitz behind that off Orakpo. Both are picked up by linemen but it creates a sufficient perception of pressure for Young to panic and try to force a quick slant.
4-1-TEN 30 (:39) (Punt formation) B.Kern punts 31 yards to WAS 39, Center-K.Amato, downed by TEN-K.Amato.
Washington Redskins at 0:29
1-10-WAS 39 (:29) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short right to K.Williams to WAS 45 for 6 yards (W.Witherspoon, S.Marks).
Keiliand takes the dumpoff in the flat and could easily get out of bounds but tries to work upfield for yards instead.
Timeout #2 by WAS at 00:20.
2-4-WAS 45 (:20) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short middle to K.Williams to TEN 43 for 12 yards (J.McCourty) [D.Ball].
McNabb has time initially but he’s waiting for deep routes that never come open and Trent eventually gets overwhelmed by a late stunt, so the throw goes to Keiland three yards over the middle. This time he at least tries to get to the sideline, but there’s a long way to go and a DB catches him.
Timeout #3 by WAS at 00:12.
1-10-TEN 43 (:12) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short left to K.Williams pushed ob at TEN 40 for 3 yards (R.Mouton).
2-7-TEN 40 (:06) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short left to J.Galloway pushed ob at TEN 33 for 7 yards (J.McCourty).
Galloway easily gets open on an out against oddly soft coverage, given that it is quite obvious we’d want to run a quick route toward the sideline to move a into field goal range and stop the clock.
