Lt. Robert Collins

Don't worry, I won't make a habit out of letting real life intrude into our little football blog here, but this seems like an appropriate exception.

Lt. Robert Collins was recently killed in action in Iraq.  His girlfriend, Nicolle, is a co-worker of mine.  They had been together since high school.  I never met the guy; all I know is that he's a West Point graduate, he went to Ranger school, he's gone, and that Nicolle is a really nice girl who doesn't deserve to be going through this.

So I'd like to ask you a favor - next time you're at your local bar, please take a moment and have a drink for Lt. Collins, and Nicolle as well.

  1. I went to middle and high school with Robert and Nicolle. I came across this blog entry when I googled his name to find more info as to what happened. Robert was kind, smart and probably the funniest guy I had met during my school years. You couldn't ask for two better people than Robert and Nicolle. My heart breaks for Nicolle. Robert was a special guy loved by everyone he came into contact with and will be missed terribly. Nicolle doesn't deserve this pain, not in the least.

I am sitting here raising a glass to this outstanding young man. I honor him with my tears and thank him for my freedom. My heart aches for the pain his family must go through. They don't know me but Robert's picture now hangs in my office. When someone asks "who is that?", I will let them know that it is a photo of a great human being that gave his life for them without knowing there name......I think they should know his name.

  5. I've never seen your blog until tonight but thank you for sharing about Bobby today. He was truly a great human being and it will be a sad day when we forget to honor our war heroes. There are a lot of glasses being raised at West Point tonight, many of them in the name of Robert Collins.

  6. Bob was the best person I have ever know, his love and compassion for his fellow man will never be forgotten. I cannot express the joy I feel in having the pleasure of knowing him. I will always raise my glass to him. He was a true hero.
sometimes there's a man... I will say a hero 'cause, what's a hero? But sometimes, there's a man. And I'm talkin' about the Dude here. Sometimes, there's a man, well, he's the man for his time and place. He fits right in there. And that's the Dude, good night sweet prince

  7. Our hearts are broken that Robert has met with an untimely end to his earthly life. We watched him grow up, graduate from high school and then West Point. He was always a very special person to those of us who knew him at church. There was no doubt of his commitment to the Lord. For his parents, who also served our country in war (in the military), and his girlfriend, we send our love and prayers, for the love of their lives is gone.

  8. Amen.

And so many thanks to all the other brave soldiers who defend our rights and safety and freedom and even our ability to enjoy frivolous things like professional sports like we do back here in the States. We should say thank you so much more often than we do...

  14. I went to high school with Robert. He could make me laugh harder than anyone I've ever known. It's so hard to be sad thinking about him, because he was just so damn funny. Good God, I can't believe he's gone. My prayers to the Collins and to his beautiful girlfriend Nicolle.

  19. We knew Robert growing up in high school and at church. He was a good person and a friend to all. My daughter was in VBS with him as a teenager. Robert knew how to make everyone feel good, even if they were having a bad day. He was funny, witty, and had one of the best outlooks on life I have ever seen in a young person. My prayers to the Collins' family and his girlfriend.
