Redskins vs. Giants 2nd quarter game review

SECOND QUARTER

2-10-NYG 25 (15:00) (Shotgun) R.Grossman pass short middle to S.Moss to NYG 20 for 5 yards (J.Goff).

3-5-NYG 20 (14:25) (Shotgun) R.Grossman sacked at NYG 30 for -10 yards (O.Umenyiora). FUMBLES (O.Umenyiora), RECOVERED by NYG-J.Pierre-Paul at NYG 25. J.Pierre-Paul to NYG 25 for no gain (K.Lichtensteiger).

Cooley gets beat badly, but it’s Trent who causes this sack. The RDE (Umenyiora) is beating Cooley around the outside. Keiland sees this and sets himself up to help, but Trent has turned inside to double team the DT. A safety had lined up on the LOS in a rather obvious blitz, and of course Cooley was responsible for the DE, so presumably Trent should have taken this blitzer. Instead Keiland has to react at the last second to pick him up and no one is there to bail out Cooley.

New York Giants at 14:17

1-10-NYG 25 (14:17) B.Jacobs left guard to NYG 25 for no gain (V.Holliday).

Nice job by Vonnie doing exactly what a 3-4 DE is supposed to do. He uses his strength to halt the LT on the line and keeps him in front of him so he can control the gap to either side, then once the runner commits he sheds off to stuff him.

2-10-NYG 25 (13:36) B.Jacobs right guard to NYG 28 for 3 yards (R.Doughty; P.Buchanon).

Bryant holds up the C and RG on the line so that neither can release to the linebackers. Rocky was kept clean and should have stuffed the play but he overruns the gap (this is a routine occurrence unfortunately), but due to the lack of second level blockers Doughty is able to close and stop the play.

3-7-NYG 28 (12:54) (Shotgun) E.Manning pass short right to D.Hagan to NYG 37 for 9 yards (B.Westbrook).

Nickel package with Vonnie and Jarmon as the two DEs. Vonnie attacks across the face of the LG, gets past him and slams into the flank of the C, and drives the C into the RG. Yes, Vonnie is occupying all three interior linemen. It’s an impressive play, but unfortunately Fletcher’s blitz and Jarmon’s stunt, both behind Vonnie and through the left B gap, take too long to develop and Manning is able to hit the slot WR as he beats Byron Westbrook on an out.

1-10-NYG 37 (12:16) E.Manning pass deep left to D.Hagan ran ob at WAS 46 for 17 yards.

1-10-WAS 46 (11:51) E.Manning pass incomplete short middle to K.Boss (V.Holliday) [D.Scott]. Shovel pass

Darrion Scott, at LDE, beats the RT with a spin move. The RG tries to help but gets caught up by Carriker who has blown past the C from nose tackle. Scott wraps up Manning and forces a desperate shovel pass.

2-10-WAS 46 (11:45) A.Bradshaw left guard to WAS 43 for 3 yards (D.Scott; L.Fletcher).

3-7-WAS 43 (11:04) (Shotgun) E.Manning pass short middle to M.Clayton to WAS 38 for 5 yards (R.McIntosh; D.Hall).

4-2-WAS 38 (10:18) M.Dodge punts 38 yards to end zone, Center-Z.DeOssie, Touchback.

Washington Redskins at 10:11

1-10-WAS 20 (10:11) R.Grossman pass deep middle to A.Armstrong to WAS 40 for 20 yards (A.Ross).

1-10-WAS 40 (9:42) R.Torain right end to WAS 39 for -1 yards (R.Bernard).

The DT lowers his shoulder into Rabach and basically carries him across the backfield.

2-11-WAS 39 (9:01) R.Torain left end to WAS 39 for no gain (T.Thomas).

Armstrong can’t sustain his block on the CB quite long enough and Torain is taken down before he can turn the corner, though it probably wouldn’t have mattered because the blockers were slow to get to the second level and the MLB was tracking him down the line.

3-11-WAS 39 (8:20) (Shotgun) R.Grossman pass incomplete deep middle to A.Armstrong.

Rabach doubles a DT with Montgomery. The other DT stunts around him and goes through the left A gap, but Lichtensteiger has already turned outside to double the RDE with Trent. Rex still gets it out on time and actually makes a perfect throw, but Armstrong slips making his cut.

4-11-WAS 39 (8:14) S.Paulescu punts 44 yards to NYG 17, Center-N.Sundberg. A.Ross to NYG 31 for 14 yards (B.Westbrook, M.Sellers).

4.3 seconds – hey, about average.

New York Giants at 8:00

1-10-NYG 31 (8:00) (Shotgun) E.Manning pass short left to D.Ware to NYG 47 for 16 yards (L.Fletcher).

Carriker is one of two DLs in the nickel package and splits the A gap a bit too easily, so it unsurprisingly turns out to be a screen and the LG and C get downfield to put solid blocks on Doughty and Rocky to spring the play.

1-10-NYG 47 (7:21) E.Manning pass short left to M.Manningham to NYG 47 for no gain (P.Buchanon).

Buchanon does not seem to have been playing off enough to have justified this quick hitch, and he closes and makes a perfect wrap up tackle.

2-10-NYG 47 (6:40) B.Jacobs left guard to NYG 46 for -1 yards (V.Holliday, K.Barnes).

The Giants do what always pisses me off so badly when the Redskins do it – the LT and LG each release straight to the second level, forgetting that one of them is probably supposed to stay and block Holliday. For what it’s worth, Darrion Scott at LDE also impressively beat his man and may have made the stop in the backfield if Holliday hadn’t beaten him to it.

3-11-NYG 46 (5:59) (Shotgun) E.Manning pass short middle to D.Hagan to WAS 42 for 12 yards (B.Westbrook; L.Fletcher).

1-10-WAS 42 (5:14) E.Manning pass incomplete short right to A.Bradshaw.

Manning has time in the pocket but can’t find anyone downfield; by the time he decides to go to the RB in the flat Scott has fought past the LG and makes Manning rush the throw.

2-10-WAS 42 (5:08) A.Bradshaw left end to WAS 41 for 1 yard (B.Orakpo).

Orakpo, who has struggled to shed TEs all year, does it perfectly here and chases down the RB as he tries to turn the corner.

3-9-WAS 41 (4:27) (Shotgun) E.Manning pass short right to D.Hagan ran ob at WAS 26 for 15 yards.

1-10-WAS 26 (3:55) E.Manning pass deep right to K.Boss to WAS 2 for 24 yards (L.Fletcher).

Fletcher manages to run downfield stride for stride with the tight end, but lacks the awareness to know when the ball is arriving and allows the TE to make a very impressive but uncontested catch.

1-2-WAS 2 (3:11) W.Beatty reported in as eligible. B.Jacobs right end for 2 yards, TOUCHDOWN.

Doughty takes down the lead FB to force the play inside, but Jacobs lowers his shoulder and runs through the tackles of Fletcher and Rocky to score.

L.Tynes extra point is GOOD, Center-Z.DeOssie, Holder-S.Rosenfels.

NYG 10 WAS 0, 9 plays, 69 yards, 4:54 drive, 11:54 elapsed

L.Tynes kicks 71 yards from NYG 30 to WAS -1. B.Banks to WAS 20 for 21 yards (J.Pierre-Paul).

Washington Redskins at 3:06, (1st play from scrimmage 2:59)

1-10-WAS 20 (2:59) R.Grossman pass incomplete short right to A.Armstrong.

Rex's lack of arm strength kills another sideline route.

2-10-WAS 20 (2:55) R.Grossman pass short middle to C.Cooley to WAS 36 for 16 yards (D.Grant).

1-10-WAS 36 (2:22) R.Grossman pass short middle to F.Davis to NYG 45 for 19 yards (K.Phillips, M.Boley).

Rex has to get the ball back as Lichtensteiger is immediately driven back into him.

Two-Minute Warning

1-10-NYG 45 (2:00) (Shotgun) R.Grossman pass short right to S.Moss to NYG 27 for 18 yards (T.Thomas; K.Phillips).

1-10-NYG 27 (1:23) (Shotgun) R.Grossman pass short left to K.Williams pushed ob at NYG 4 for 23 yards (T.Thomas).

Finally a screen that is made to look plausible to the defense. Lichtensteiger and Rabach do a decent job of holding their pass block long enough to suck the Giants in, then shed off and Rabach takes down the MLB while Lichtensteiger shows off his mobility by racing way downfield and cutting off the DB;s pursuit angles.

1-4-NYG 4 (1:14) R.Torain left tackle to NYG 1 for 3 yards (M.Boley; J.Goff).

The DT gets penetration on Montgomery, but Montgomery recovers by getting away with a hold and spinning him around, allowing Torain to make it through the hole. He probably could have scored had Brown been able to land a more solid second level block on the LB.

Timeout #1 by WAS at 00:29.

2-1-NYG 1 (:29) R.Grossman pass short right to F.Davis for 1 yard, TOUCHDOWN.

Davis sells the play fake with a solid initial block, so the defense forgets about him when he peels off and runs a shallow cross. It’s a good thing he was so absurdly wide open, because that was one serious lob from Rex.

G.Gano extra point is GOOD, Center-N.Sundberg, Holder-S.Paulescu.

NYG 10 WAS 7, 7 plays, 80 yards, 2:44 drive, 14:38 elapsed

G.Gano kicks 41 yards from WAS 30 to NYG 29. J.Pierre-Paul to NYG 41 for 12 yards (L.Alexander, H.Blades).

This was a deliberate squib kick.

New York Giants at 0:22, (1st play from scrimmage 0:17)

1-10-NYG 41 (:17) (Shotgun) A.Bradshaw left end to NYG 44 for 3 yards (R.McIntosh).

It seems like Rob Jackson should have outside contain on this draw play, but he jumps inside with his pass rush and falls when trying to recover. Fortunately Rocky makes a good pursuit and takes the RB down from behind.

Timeout #1 by NYG at 00:10.

2-7-NYG 44 (:10) E.Manning pass incomplete deep left to M.Manningham [B.Orakpo].

Holliday once again drives inside and ties up all three interior OLs, allowing Alexander to stunt behind him and hit Manning as he threw.
