On Friday I, and presumably all Redskins season ticket holders, received an email from the Washington Redskins. The subject line read "Redskins Recruit New Powerhouse."

Today the Washington Redskins appointed a new leader...

Wait, what? And yes, the bold is in the original. Surely this isn't a real message about a significant change in team management... but is it? At the very least I'm now hooked into reading the rest of the email.

... that will strengthen the team with speed, control, spirit, and drive.

Oh shit it's a car.

There was then an embedded video featuring a pretty classy looking picture of a Redskins helmet. It takes you to an ad for the Season of Audi event.

Now I'm not bothered by sponsorship deals; the Redskins are a profit-maximizing business like any other and I don't begrudge them making money.

I also tend to shy away from gratuitous Snyder bashing, not because I disagree with all of it (some is fair, some is unfair) but because there's so much of it out there already I don't feel like I'm contributing anything by piling on.

But in this case Snyder, or someone in his marketing department who presumably needs to get Snyder's sign-off on these things, is actually trying to capitalize on the fan base's disgust with the team management to drive clicks on an Audi ad.

Is this repugnant? Hilarious? Appalling? Sad? I was so floored by this that I honestly can't decide on the appropriate reaction.

Kedric Golston holds up against a double team to make the play, which allows Philip Daniels to shed off the RT and make the tackle.

Eagles easily adjust to stunts on both sides, so the Redskins only succeed in sapping their own forward momentum and McNabb has plenty of time. Kareem Moore is right on Celek's hip as the ball arrives, and maybe gets a way with just a little PI.

McNabb has no idea there's pressure coming so he doesn't bother to step up and is hit as he throws, causing the ball to float easily into Tryon's hands.

Fred Davis is at LTE. Jones has the RDE under control, so Davis comes off him but instead of picking up the DB who is the much bigger threat he lets him slip by and seeks out a LB. That DB is able to collapse the corner.

Campbell never looked at anyone but Davis, then double-clutched and was forced to throw it out the back of the end zone. He had plenty of protection, and even if he didn't have another receiver available there was plenty of room to the left for him to leave the pocket and either run it himself or buy still more time for someone to come open.

Eagles leave in seven to block, and both Carter and Daniels are neutralized by double teams (Daniels has been consistently doubled when at DT on pass plays). Excellent coverage by Tryon - despite the time McNabb has in the pocket he is right in front of Avant on a deep post. McNabb tries to put it high to give Avant a chance, but Tryon leaps and gets his hand in Avant's face to break up the pass. Tryon is not rewarded for his efforts - Landry and Doughty both close in for kill shots on the receiver but they come in too high and Tryon gets sandwiched.

Tell me if this sounds familiar - the catch is made in front of LaRon Landry at the 30. Instead of just making a professional tackle, Landry lowers his shoulder and leaves his feet to try to make some breathtaking hit. Landry only makes a glancing blow, and is therefore personally responsible for allowing 16 more yards. This is really getting old.

Byron Westbrook blitzes from the offensive left but inexplicably hesitates once he gets into the backfield, which allows a pulling guardd to account for him at the last second. Rocky blitzes around the offensive right and is untouched except for a brief TE chip, and blindsides McNabb as he throws. The ball sails, but Avant makes an excellent catch going up for it over the middle.

This is play action out of an I formation.Golston beats the C and then dodges the FB as he is going out on a route, and then, fooled by the play action, he lands a solid hit on the trailing RB. This means the RB is way too late slipping through the line and making it to the right flat for the screen pass. MEanwhile Griffin comes in clean and forces McNabb out of the pocket. When McNabb sees his RB is not in position he simply spikes the ball a good six yard short of the LOS - the absence of an intentional grounding call here is ludicrous.

Vick rolls left on a waggle and has Celek open in the flat, but he drops another easy pass.

The C and LG try to try to move Golston on the line and he stops them cold, so when the LG sheds off to take on Fletcher the C simply wraps his arm around Golston's neck and puts him in a headlock from behind to keep him from collapsing the hole. No flag.

Eagles line up with a trips bunch tight to the left, and from that bunch a TE comes across the back of the line as if lead-blocking for a run up the middle or to the right. The Redskins line bites and crashes to the offensive right, and both of our OLBs try to clog the lanes up the middle. The play-side OLB (unidentified) is therefore easily sealed inside by Celek, and the WR who is the third man of the Eagles bunch blocks Fletcher. Smoot has a shot at the RB around the corner but takes a lousy angle and misses the tackle.

This penalty wasn't a case of a guy running to the sideline and not making it in time - there were actually 12 guys lined up for the goal line defense. Unsurprisingly, we stuff the run.

Golston and Griffin dive to the ground to take out the C and RG and prevent any sort of push on the line. Then Golston some how emerges from underneath the Eagle's linemen like some sort of swamp monster and trips up the leading FB (much to the FB's surprise, I imagine), which allows Rocky to come in clean and stuff the RB along with Landry, who had actually beaten the LG to gain penetration.

Chris Wilson and Andre Carter allow themselves to get sealed outside too easily by the LT and TE respectively. Rocky is in the running lane and even though he leading FB misses him he misreads the RBs angle and lets him slip past.

The protection collapses. Fred Davis is at RTE and presumably should read the blitz and help out, but instead he releases directly into his route. Slot corner blitzes from the offensive right, where Heyer is all by himself. At the same time, the LDE stunts to the inside. Edwin Williams reads the stunt and tries to pass off the DT to Heyer so that Williams can pick up the DE, but Heyer is frozen by the CB on the outside and just lets the DT through. After he is beat Heyer turns around and gets the holding call by wrapping up the DT from behind, which probably saved Jason from getting hit.

Redskins line manages to hold the corner, but McCoy makes a nice cut back to the inside.

This is the third time the Eagles have lined up with a trips bunch tight to the left, out of which a TE leads to the right. The first time two were runs to the left and this one, unsurprisingly, was a play action pass with a bootleg to the right. Chris Wilson is at LDE and does a good job of keeping contain; he also puts a good hit on that shifty TE that delays him releasing into his flat route until Doughty is there to cover it. McNabb is forced to pull the ball down and just slides when he sees four Redskins closing on him.

Thomas has been doing a pretty good job on kick returns, but here he's not aggressive enough pushing the ball downfield and is caught from behind while waiting for the blockers to open up a hole.

Davis is running a deep post but barely has a step on the LB covering him, so Campbell is forced to lead him to much. Davis is able to get a hand on it while diving but can't quite make the catch. As the color guy points out after the play, Davis probably could have beaten the LB by bending his route a bit harder to the inside.

Jones is beaten by Cole again, and a DB blitzes unmolested from the offensive right. Campbell manages to step up to avoid the pressure and hits Randle-El on a crossing pattern.

This is all on Campbell. None of the short routes get open against the man coverage, but instead of exploiting the easy running room he stand there and pumps until Juqua Parker is able to roll off of Edwin Williams and hit him as he throws. As has been well-publicized, Parker also commits a blatant and gratuitous act of roughing the passer which goes uncalled. I will paraphrase a comment I saw from a Football Outsiders writer (but can't find the link): "If Juqua Parker had done that to Tom Brady instead of Jason Campbell he wouldn't just be fined - he would be deported." Juqua Parker has made my enemies list.

Davis makes the catch 5 yards past the LOS on a shallow cross. He outruns the trailing defender to turn it upfield near the sideline, then lowers his shoulder and bounces off another DB. That guy desperately graps his shoe, but Davis pulls free and runs through three more defenders before going down. I think the dramatic leaps really are out of his system.

Because I just praised Davis, now he screws up. He takes on the RDE, but then is threatened by a LB trying to come around the edge. He comes off the DE to try to stop the LB, but blocks neither one. The shame of it is, Levi Jones had succesfully gotten out to block the MLB, and the OLB Davis was worried about had taken himself out of a running lane. If Davis had let him go and held his block on the DE Rock would have gained some yards.

The initial pressure comes from the LDE and LDT who beat Heyer and Edwin Williams. Campbell shows a lot of strenght by absorbing the blows and trying to step up, but he does so right into the face of the second DT who had initially been well-blocked by Dockery. Campbell somehow manages to change direction and escape to the left, where while on a dead spring he notices that Devin Thomas has once again gotten himself open while Jason was running for his life.

Williams allows penetration up the middle and Campbell is flushed to the right. The LB who is in man coverage on Davis on the goal line thinks Campbell has committed to run - and Campbell was so close to the LOS that the LB may have thought he had crossed it - so he drops his coverage and the pass is thrown right over his head. Oops.

The guards do a good job of getting out to the LBs, but Rabach is unable to get any push on a DT and this collapses the play. But everyone knows that Rabach cannot physically match up with a DT one on one, so either this was a poorly designed play or one of the Gs was supposed to help him out.

TMQ and Santana's 4 yard touchdown

I noticed the following passage in Gregg Easterbrook's most recent Tuesday Morning Quarterback column:

Santana Moss of Washington was covered by no one on his 4-yard touchdown reception in the same contest. Eagles safety Macho Harris lined up across from Moss, then simply stood there as Moss ran a slant for six. TMQ contends it is amazing how often, on NFL plays, there is at least one gentleman standing around basically doing nothing at all.

Tonight I sent Easterbrook the following email, which you will find closely mirrors my write-up of the touchdown in the 2nd quarter review:

You are unfair to Macho Harris - I disagree that he "simply stood there." Here's how I interpret the play:

- Redskins line up with Malcolm Kelly wide left and Santana Moss in the left slot.

- Sheldon Brown lines up outside Kelly to keep from giving up the easy fade (Kelly's big).

- Likewise, Macho Harris lines up on Moss' outside shoulder because otherwise Moss could easily beat him to the flat for a free touchdown.

- Because of his outside positioning, Sheldon Brown is totally out of position when Kelly runs a slant.

- It appears the Eagles prepped for this: Macho Harris abandons his coverage on Moss and jumps Kelly's slant. It appears to me this was by design.

- Jeremiah Trotter then moves to the outside to disrupt Moss's slant, but he is late because he bites on the Redskins O-line's run action to the opposite side. If Trotter had read the play quicker, or if Campbell had hesitated before getting the ball out, Trotter would have broken up the play. However, as soon as Campbell saw the outside alignment of the DBs I think he knew exactly where he was going.

In short, I think that Macho Harris did his job - the slant to Malcolm Kelly was covered. And the shift in coverage appeared to me to be a planned reaction to the Redskins running slants. If anyone blew their assignment, it was Trotter.

Keep in mind that I am a Redskins fan and not in any way predisposed to defend an Eagles player.

Do you see the play differently?

This is why I enjoy going over plays multiple times - it really lets you gain an appreciation for all the variables that go into the result of a football play.

At the same time, of course, everything is still open to wildly different interpretations. I inferred what I could from watching the players on the field, but I have not studied the playbook of either the Eagles or the Redskins. Maybe I am assigning motives and strategies where there were none? Easterbrook could be totally right, and no one other than the Eagles coaching staff would be able to correct him with confidence. And of course there is the real possibility that we both missed the real crux of the play.

Football is one of those things that just gets more interesting the more closely you look at it - but as an outsider you also have to accept that there are limits to what you are able to understand.

DE realized immediately realized that Davis was only blocking him for show to set up a screen, so he stayed back and wrapped Davis up as soon as he caught the ball.

Kelly is at split end and Moss is in the slot. The CB over Kelly is playing outside leverage to keep from giving up the easy fade. The DB over Moss is also playing outside because otherwise Moss would easily beat him to the flat for a free touchdown. When they both run slants, the secondary has to adjust. Moss' DB jumps outside to cut off Kelly's slant. This obviously leaves Santana open. A LB tries to come over to disrupt Santana, but he's too slow because Campbell knows where he's going as soon as he sees where the DBs line up and gets the ball out immediately.

S.Suisham extra point is GOOD, Center-E.Albright, Holder-H.Smith.

McNabb halts the rush with two fake handoffs on a Statue of Liberty play (really). Maclin has about four steps on Smoot and Landry, but McNabb underthrows it and Maclin is forced to slow up enough for Landry to hit him as the ball arrives.

Eldrick Bunkley kicks Chris Wilson in the face while running downfield on punt coverage. No question that this was 100% deliberate. I'm happy to take the 15 yards, but how was he not ejected?

Sellers leads from FB but doesn't get a very solid block on LB Witherspoon, who sheds off him and makes the tackle.

DE Trent Cole fights through Levi Jones' outside shoulder to force Campbell to step up into the pocket. Campbell has tons of open field in front of him and could easily run for the first down, but instead tries to dump it off to Randle-El in the flat and it gets deflected by the DT.

Sellers and Ranldle-El line up in either slot and each run crossing routes into the same spot, so somebody screwed up their route. Naturally this draws three defenders into the middle of the field and the throw never has a chance.

LT pulls to the outside, leaving a TE to fight for the corner against Chris Wilson. Wilson wins this battle, and Tryon fights through the slot receiver's block, so the corner is denied. He cuts it back inside, but Golston has evaded a cut block and is there to make the stop.

A pretty questionable holding call on Sellers. He opens up the hole from LTE, then Mason runs behind Edwin Williams and Dockery who each get serious drive blocks on LBs.

Santana is covered by a LB, so on the surface this doesn't look like that bad a decision. Asante Samuel isn't even on camera when Campbell throws and then comes out of nowhere to make the pick. I haven't exactly shied away from criticizing Campbell lately, but upon review this just looks like an exceptional play by Samuel. Samuels completely abandons Randle-El to jump the pass to Santana. Had this been a pump fake, Samuel would have been responsible for an easy 79 yard touchdown.

Philadelphia Eagles at 3:04

This should have been an even bigger gain. The C had a free shot at Fletcher and either the C didn't hustle enough to get to him or McCoy wasn't patient enough to wait for the block. End result is that McCoy runs past the C and straight into Fletcher's arms.

Next time Campbell plays the Eagles, I hope he remembers to pump fake and punish this guy for his aggressiveness.

"This One Could Be a Bit of a Challenge," opines Ben at Curly R, thus earning a nomination for the first annual SM "Understated Blog Headline of the Year Award." I admire his reserve, considering that watching the Saints dominate the Patriots last night caused me to urinate in my pants (just a little bit). Seriously, though, he points out the historical difficulty of any team going 12-0 and holds out just a glimmer of hope that the Redskins might block them from this goal.

I've seen arguments that we need to run the ball effectively to keep the ball out of Brees' hands, but I don't buy this given that he threw those 5 touchdowns last night in only 23 pass attempts. Playing ball control against them would seem like a classic case of bringing a knife to a gun fight.

My inclination is to swing for the fences and try to score early and often. Go deep, don't worry about time of possession or avoiding 3 and outs. Odds are, the Saints pass rush and Campbell's inconsistency will prevent this from working. But given that no one expects us to be competitive in this game, why not try the high-risk, high-reward approach? The best case scenario, though highly unlikely, is one of the greatest upsets of the year. The worst case scenario is we get slaughtered, which the whole country is expecting anyway. So what have we got to lose?

We will need:

1) At least a few explosive plays from the offense. If these occur, I have a feeling they will involve Devin Thomas.

2) At least adequate protection to set up said explosive plays. Since we will never win this game with dumpoffs anyway, we may as well leave the RBs in to block and give Campbell a little more time to let deep routes develop.

3) Generate pressure with the front four. If we blitz Brees he will eat us alive. Haynesworth should be back, meaning Carter and Orakpo should get some shots at Brees. Go for the strip.

4) Those passes that get deflected and fall right into a Redskin defender's hands? They need to be caught this week. If we pull off an upset it will be because we capitalized on opportunities.

5) None of those blown assignments that leave an opposing WR open by 20 yards. We've seen too many of these lately, and it is especially frustrating since the secondary has shown that if they remember the play call they can cover just about anybody. The Saints are going to score points, but we can't be giving away anything for free.

6) On a related note, maybe the secondary should generally play conservative and try to force the Saints to score on long drives rather than quick strikes, to keep things close enough that a couple of big plays from the offense can keep us in it. Let the pass rushers create the turnovers. And LaRon - if a guy catches a ball over the middle just wrap him up, rather than going for the Sean Taylor-type hits and allowing 20 more YAC.

7) I'm not sure about this one - but if there are any more fake punts or field goals in the playbook, this may be the time to break them out. I only hesitate because we may want to save them for the future Giants and Dallas games, which we have a better chance of winning and are against teams we hate more.

And yes, I recognize that many of the above points are counting on the Redskins reversing tendencies they have demonstrated throughout the season. These are not predictions, they are hopes.

So I want your thoughts on this - what's our best chance to beat New Orleans? And how utterly misguided are my above thoughts?

Redskins @ Eagles, 1st quarter review

OK - first real post in a week. I tried to do a brief review of the Dallas game last night, only to find that NFL Rewind is not accessible at any time live football is on the air, so basically the game review got preempted by Pats-Saints. At that point I decided to cut my losses and move on to the Eagles game. Sorry the Dallas game got so royally screwed up - hopefully the computer issues are behind me. Thanks for your patience.

The PBP is taken directly from the NFL Game Book, with my commentary added.

1st Quarter

D.Akers kicks onside 19 yards from PHI 30 to PHI 49. Q.Ganther to PHI 24 for 25 yards (E.Buckley).
PENALTY on PHI, Illegal Touch Kick, 5 yards, enforced at PHI 24.

Color commentator Daryl Johnston described this as a sign of Andy Reid's respect for the Redskins, but I see it as a lack of respect - he doesn't fear our offense enough to shy away from giving us a short field, and he felt if he could convert this kick and get a quick lead he could put us away early.

Play was designed to go inside left and there appeared to be a good lane there - Dockery and Edwin Williams had gotten out to the LBs - but the split end on the left, who I think is Devin Thomas but can't be sure, ignores his man and that DB has a clear angle to fill the rushing lane. Rock sees this and cuts back to the right. Fred Davis had been blocking the DE on that side and doing it well, but he was staying inside him to seal him outside so that when Rock cut outside the DE was easily able to shed off Davis and make the play.

Redskins load up on power to the right with Lorenzo Alexander and Mike Sellers as twins TEs. Edwin Williams (the RG of the day) attempts to pull to the outside to win the corner but trips. Fortunately Marcus Mason picks up the DB coming off the edge and Cambell is able to cut to the inside where Sellers and Alexander have completely stonewalled a LB and DE respectively, opening a big hole into the end zone.

It's Landry who gives up the big gain. Fletcher pursues to the hole but is taken out by a pulling guard. The slot receiver is forced to dodge the resulting collision and so is behind McCoy when he makes it through the hole. Landry should have a free shot, but he vastly overpursues to the outside and is caught desperately trying to recover as McCoy runs straight through where Landry should have been.

LG hits Rocky McIntosh 2 yards past the LOS and drives him back 5 more. McCoy runs right behind him.

Horrible tackle attempt by Carlos Rogers. It only leads to 4 yards after catch, but it should have been none. As for the penalty Tryon lined up over the slot receiver and realized at the last second he wasn't even supposed to be in. He tried to sprint to the sideline but didn't quite make it.

London Fletcher misreads the play and overpursues to the offensive left following a lead blocker, and is unable to recover when Weaver cuts inside right through a hole opened up by a double team on Kedric Golston.

WR Avant motions to FB and the play action is supposed to get him open in the flat, but Rogers reads the play all the way and stays with him, forcing McNabb to throw it out the back of the end zone.

Got a little lucky on this one. Celek's PI against Rocky McIntosh did not effect the play, which involved DeSean Jackson getting wide open in the back of the end zone, apparently due to a blown assignment in the secondary.

Fred Davis not only kicks out the DE to open the hole, he also carries him downfield enough to cut off a DBs pursuit angle. Don't get me wrong - despite Fred Davis' recent development we would still be a much better offense with Chris Cooley's receiving skills - but the TE change has upgraded the blocking situation.

The O-line tries to sell a fake run to the left but the Eagles aren't fooled. Kelly blocks one DB and Thomas dodges another, but a DE and LB come over to stuff the play.
